It wasn't that long ago piracy was rife amongst members. I know it's decreased massively - membership and piracy - and know a few people that are over their hobby.

I think the main difference between then and now has been the business model change from suppliers.
Spotify / Amazon prime have revolutionised the way people access movies, tv and music.
For the sake of a fiver a month for spotify (student weyhey!) & 70 p/a for amazon - just makes accessing so much easier.
The effort involved in torrenting / newsfeeds just doesn't seem worth the bother.
I don't think the (implied) threat has ever been a deterrent.

I went to the pictures with a friend the other week who hadn't been for a decade because he'd seen everything that was showing before it was available in the UK, apart from the price he had a good night out.

I have heard tales of being able to rent HD movies from iTunes, obviously a lesser price point than buying, especially if it's their 99c weekly rental thing, and then using something to rip the DRM from it, thus removing the rental period timeout but leaving you with the movie, including the 5.1 Audio.

a lot of the guys i knew at college were in the old school group SKR and DOD, DOD got busted and it was all over the news, think there mail FXP server was Bostons MIT.
I think with all the online streaming Netflix, iTunes and Spotify its not as bad as it used to be.
Even games now i can't be bothered and buy them, most are on Steam, Xbox ones and ps4 need to be bought, 360 is dusty never use it.
i think all this online stuff put it pretty much to bed, the scenes still running but newsgroup releated mainly.

WIth online activation its becoming harder and harder to pirate games, and alot nowadays are multiplayer anyway.
Movies are still going strong on the pirate front though
