One of the reasons why updates are enforced in Windows 10. You can't choose not to install them, it's just done automatically.

The problem with MS security updates is they were busted together withe non-security updates, and some of which had a negative impact on stabilty and/or performance, the cynic in me would call it intentional obsolescence. Hence the wish to do it manually and only select the security eealted ones and also make sure it's done after the system has been backed up to the NAS.

I know 99% of demestic computer users don't do this, and indeed I used to have everything on auto and not been amused when wanting to shut down a laptop to take on my journey only for it to flatten the battery in the process after it's been unplugged. With the worst case of a driver update causing the destruction/loss of the file table for my RAID 0 array.

Understandly the latter will ruin more than a day in having to put it right; cryptolocker did less damage.

So yes I either vet updates before installing and/or ensure the whole system is fully backed up in its entirety. PITA.

On the plus side last ip4s update seems to have sorted the battery 3 days on one charge....so much for needing a new battery that the Op told me to get.

Sounds like every company. As much as we'd like our old equipment to to run securely without slowly degrading it's not going to happen. Not unless you're going to pay for the development and you're not.

I got the email from MS about this Out-Of-Band bulletin on the morning of the 20th.

It's the first Out-Of-Band notice I've seen in a long while. Can't fault them for their information on security updates.
