If its heavily stained, you can use a very fine wire wool, along with any good metal polish. I also use autosol to good affect.

Strictly then it can't "rust"as it's not iron oxide ...... which I guess greatgonzo was saying

Shaun is correct, it shouldn't rust, its probably pitted by other contaminants that have rusted

Another vote for using Solvol Autosol after 10 minutes of patient application it will be shining like a new one. Did mine last month.

That pic doesn't show rust, that's discolouration of stainless steel which is inevitable when it gets heated to the temperature of a typical exhaust. I also use Autosol and my exhaust looks the same. You'll end up with nice shiny discolouration but you'll never get it back to as-new silver colour.

i nevet thought of that just assumed it was rust, i didn't use any polish on my exhaust for the first 2 years and wondered if 'damage' was caused then

would still only use the wire wool as a last resort as it will still faintly scratch the finish.
I use the megs nxt metal polish & g101 etc to help clean it up, let it soak in etc & keep having a go at it before the wire
wool goes on it.
