Seconded, I have just searched for a mobile phone in the for sale section and it bought up a thread from 1999 as being 100% relevant, search really is **** put it back to how it was FFS!

I actually like it.
Since I've been on SN, I've never been able to see more than 4 search pages, which drastically limits the search options. Just types in four pots and got 32 pages!

I would settle for 1 page of useful information over 32 pages of useless tat.

Guys

There's no need to be offensive.

Can you tell me what is actually wrong with the new search facility?

For instance, Shaggy's aggressive comments state (As a negative) something which should actually be a positive.

That thread probably really WAS 100% relevant to your search. This is similar to the way that google works (the most successful search engine on earth).

If you want more recent results simply change the drop down to order by post date. Not rocket science, and not exactly a major chore!

As for other complaints. Can you please actually give us some kind of idea what is actually wrong / how you would like it to work?

And no fanciful sweeping statements like "I'd like a page of relevant results please". Please be a little more descriptive than that.

You fixed something that wasn't broken.

It was fine as it was. The majority of us do a search based on our username in the post author field.

That's turned to rat shi*t.

If I want to search for other info the results are all over the place.
The new search is gash, Webby for once, listen to your members!!!

dazdavies

Please be careful.

Original Search : Brought the board to a grinding halt every time someone searched. This means it was "broke".

Sphynx Search (the previous one to this) : Solved the board slow-down problems, but simply returned a blank white page for certain terms. This means it was "broke".

The only other search we've run is this current one, which you're telling me we installed in an attempt to fix something that wasn't broken. Clearly you're not abrest of the facts.

-

As for this search being "gash". As I said before, please try to give me a little more information to work on.

I GENUINELY can't see any problem with the current search, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong with it. All I'm asking is for some information as to WHAT is wrong with it. Then I'll be happy to "for once" listen to our members.

The problem i now have is when doing an advanced search for my user name,it used to bring up anything new, that i hadn't read,in bold, now it just brings every thread i've ever posted on,starting with the first all in bold!

OK then, as your threatening to flex those admin muscles, I'll be a tad more redfined.

Judging by this and other posts on the matter the majority of users aren't happy with the changes made.
My gripe is that everytime I do a search in advanced search (a facility I've paid for) it produces results that are at best out of date. I then have to do further filtering to get the results I wanted. Before I didn't have to do this.

I'm sure you'll get there eventually though

Yeah, four out of 85,000 members, is a definite majority representation.

No you don't. Try selecting the correct option in the first place. You told the search facility to order the list in order of relevance (just like google does). If you want a different order, tell it.

Stop being an arrogant and aggressive whinger, and start behaving like a gentleman please.

-

Hi mit

You and me both!

OK, firstly, you can order the list using the "sort by" drop down. I'll ask the guys if its possible to add an indication of whether it has been posted on or not.

This functionality you're looking for is, however, available through a standard vBulletin feature, without the need for the search facility.

go to :
https://www.scoobynet.com/profile.php?do=editoptions

Under "Messaging & Notification" > "Default Thread Subscription Mode"
Change this option to "no email notification".

Then, whenever you like, you can go to :
https://www.scoobynet.com/subscription.php

to see a list of all threads you've posted in.

Webby,

FYI I have to select the drop down box to post date everytime I perform a search in order to display the most recent infomation.
As for the name calling, that's making it personal and highly unprofessional of you to do so. You'll notice that none of my remarks were aimed at YOU personally.

I'll give you a few weeks at this before it gets too much for you and you throw the towel in with that kind of approach.

Cheers

Daz

Ok I had another look, and I must admit I hadnt seen the *forever* *years* *months* *weeks* *days* I just did the search again and searched for 30 days and it came back with a lot more useful information, I have to say it was easier before though, it just came up with the newest first.

as for google, thats google, this is scoobynet, I use both but for different reasons and to a different end. daz is right though, we do pay for this option, and to be fair yes only 4 or 5 people have complained but you know as well as I do, we dont have 85k active members.

all the best.

james

p.s. is this simon or is IB?

Could the default settings for those fields be linked into the "Save Search preferences" function? That way, once you've set that you prefer sort by date, whatever, it's your default? I don't mind, as when I want specific info, I customise the search anyway. Just trying to make a constructive comment.

Guys

It seems that the two isolated problems listed here that make the system "gash", can be solved simply by selecting the correct settings.

As this takes approximately 1 second to change, and I can't imagine you do more than a maximum of 10 searches a day, I'm going to ask you to please take these 10 seconds (maximum) on the chin, in view of the fact that it would enormous effort and time to change this to suit only you.

I'll suggest features such as the Save Search Preferences, etc. But this won't happen straight away.

If, on the other hand you just simply can't live with the system as it is, please let me know.

Webby,

You're right in that its not the end of the world or too difficult to take the steps you mentioned. It is a ball ache having to do it everytime though.
Its also remembering to do it after doing things the same way after 8 years of Scoobynet membership

Whats also quite annoying is that the results are repeated several times. i.e the same thread comes up in the search results several times. Which means more pages have to be viewed to get the required results.

FWIW I build MYSQL and SQL databases and web based front ends for a living. I'm also quite well versed in V Bulletin so I do know exactly the time and effort a change like this requires.
We've made our point and it looks like you've taken the comments made onboard so it's a good start
Many thanks

Daz

Hi Webby,

What about the ability to see threads I'm in and that have been updated since last view? i.e they turn bold when updated, now they are always bold, and also some threads are split into seperate search results.

You cannot save your search criteria either, so u always have to select posted by date to even see the recent threads, then u can't see which threads have been updated as per above.

When u finally find a thread that has been updated it goes to the 1st page and not the last.

All of the above features were present in the search that worked fine, and that most of us are use to and pay for, so why has it all changed?

I certainly can't live with it as is, I do way more than 10 searches by my ID a day that's for sure, but hey if we are in the minority and u cant maintain the search as it use to be, so be it, there won't be any more payments from me in the future, sorry.

Hi Webby,

Whilst ordering by post date makes it better, it is duplicating finds.

For example and try for yourself.

I search in drivertrain for "clutch bite"
Then choose by post date

You should see that the first and seventh entries are both the same?
I don't think it used to do that?
There are other duplications if you look further down.

Thanks,

Shaun

Hi Chaps

Daz, thanks for your comments, and understanding

--

Duplicated Entries
OK, thank you for this, and this may be able to be resolved. I'll ask the question.

All threads bold
Again, thank you. I'll ask the question about this one also.

--

"The search that worked fine"
Have a very quick look down this forum. You will see this search did not, in fact, work fine. And if you are doing way more than 10 searches a day, you will - without any shaddow of a doubt - know this.

This search was put in place in response to so many complaints about the previous search system not working.

Don't know what you mean, I've been on this bbs for god knows how long, and never had a problem with the search, apart from now of course. Only issues have been when snet has been down for maintenance, which has been few n far between to.

User error Yea ok well 99% of my searches are by my ID, which seems to have always worked.

I think that's the key, as you probably already well know, to fix the other main search types, the redesign of it has taken away one of the most useful features when searching by userID.

I can search by my ID by date, which is fine, but I can't see which threads have been updated, and also the threads are split into multiple threads, as it's all based on relevance to the ID.

Yea I guess I can live with it, but I much preferred the older version, and I don't think I am the only one to be fair, thx for replying though.

Well Webby I can't believe I missed this feature it works perfectly, and is actually better than using the old search method by ID, as it's faster to. Sorry for wasting your time and thanks.
