Default New posts and threads in bold.

Has the feature where threads with new posts are in bold changed the way it operates?

It used to unbold everything that existed when you last visited (so all bold threads had new posts) but it now seems to only unbold threads you've actually looked at.

Not in anyway a problem, just noticed a difference, couldn't see anything in CP for it and I'm a curious geek

Hi

Yes, this has slightly changed, although we're still tweaking it.

This now uses the database instead of your cookies, but I think its probably going to be better if we have the behavior how it was before. We'll trial it for a bit longer.

Well spotted!

Thanks for that.
Having come back in this morning, I think I'd agree about the previous behaviour.
You'd enter a forum, scan down the bold and peruse anything of interest that's new but with it currently, you have to scan over to the dates as well or find yourself looking at two day old threads in the quieter zones.

As I said, not a big deal but if you're tweaking, the old way works for the inherently lazy amongst us as it saves the eyes having to move to the right to check dates

Yeah, I think you're right. I'm going to make some tweaks, which should get us closer back to how we were before. Please let me know if its any better after you next 2 visits.

I need to get the bottom of the actual behavior.

The way it is working now, should be far better than the old, as it keeps a proper track of thread you've viewed and ones you haven't.

What I need to do is work out how you recognise threads that are new since your last visit.

Once we have this in place, the whole thing will be much better.

Only on my first visit since so not checked but won't you have to recognise *posts* since last visit and then flag the threads that they're in rather than threads...?

Could it not be done so that new posts are colour coded or something else ?

It was good to able to just "check in" on the new threads.

Guys

This isn't going to be "changed back", as the new behavior is far more meaningful to you that how it was before.. What we are attempting to do.. is to find a DIFFERENT method of signifying which threads have new posts since your last visit.

That way you have the best of both worlds.

If there isn't a way to do this through vBulletin's normal systems, we'll write some new code to do it instead.

I'm just waiting for a response from vbulletin, which I expect later today. I travel back to UK today, so will have the first chance to take the next look at it tomorrow, and assuming all goes well, this should be sorted very soon after that.

Cheers

Simon

OK

I've added an orange + image next to any threads that have new posts since your last visit.

Working well for me thanks. Mind you I didn't have a problem before, as I always press the "Mark Forums Read" button when I've finished

Thanks webby - works for me too and you get the best of both worlds - new threads highlighted and threads you have read highlighted
