Ok members & moderators/webmasters,
I know we have a gallery and various other members have sites that you can post pics of your cars on. But... when reading threads, and not too sure of somebody's user name, a recent or up to date clickable thumbnail pic of their car, a gif or other identifier might prove useful.
I don't know how simple or difficult it would be to add such a feature and if peeps/members would want it or not, but I'm asking the question now. Could it be as simple as enabling BBS code "[ img ]" within profiles? How would this affect BBS space and or performance if at all?
Just a thought... what do people think?
Kevin

I agree, as long as the images are small and it doesn't effect performance. Other sites/forums i visit have this and find it an easy way of recognising people.

I know a lot of the moaners always put down the idea of a small avatar (image under nick etc), even though they would be linked from own site - not using SN bandwidth. However, it might be nice to be able to link in a picture on your profile.

Agreed, if there are no performance issues, why not do it. It could be a signature or in the profile.

I agree, if the images used are the same size as the guys above have posted.
Buy I've seen some forums which are completely dominated by huge pictures across the bottom of each post. Horrible.

Definitely not. Sorry guys, but it does nothing for me whatsoever, and its absence here is in fact one of the reasons i use SN a lot rather than other sites where it is prevalent.

Telboy,
Is it just that you are not keen or are you aware of other reasons, that we may be overlooking, for not going down that route?

A size limit can be imposed with regard to the size of the image on the page - but the size of the file can only be imposed if ScoobyNet were to host the images. Then you start getting into bandwidth costs when you are looking at a site this size.
SIDC forums use the thumbnail under name method, which looks good. I agree that "signature" images often ending up looking very cluttered and very crap (see PassionFord or RSOC etc).
I think a linked image on the profile (up to 640x480 size) would be great.

K9vyn, no it's purely a personal thing. I just think it makes bbs's which use this unnecessarily fussy, and too "This Is A Car Site" for work, that's all.

Hi folks,
This idea was banded to the community some time last year, but the general vote was not to have them. Of course, if this consensus has changed and the MAJORITY think that they would like them, I can certainly see how we may be able to implement such an idea (if it is feasible, based on site traffic and speed etc).
Regards,
Shaun.

As said further up, I think the images in the profiles would be a valuable feature - but I do not think avatars would pass a vote. It is nice to have quick loading, uncluttered pages that we have now!

Shaun,
Thanks for giving this some consideration. I’m in no doubt that it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea which is fair enough. But if it is optional then those that don’t ‘dig it’ won’t make use of it and it does them no harm.
That said, the BBS works fine and I’m sure that even those who’d be for profile piccys would agree that functionality should not be compromised. It's not a major issue, just a consideration. So I am happy with the Scoobynet BBS whichever way any vote/decision happened to go.
Cheers,
Kev

Now that's a good idea!!
Each member has a switch in their profile titled "show member's avatars". By default it is switched OFF. That way, members who choose to can see the avatars, those who don't see the usual plain view.
I am sure if the avatars are small there should not be too much problem with the bandwidth - uploader limited to 100x100pixels? Else linked images (constrained to 100x100 by the html) would mean no real extra bandwidth for SN.
