I was just thinking we should upgrade this thing to vbulletin. Will give us more features n stuff, like the MLR for example.

A vbulletin licence is USD 135, like GBP 88.79. If every other member gives 1p, we could afford it

Opinions?

The scoobynet software was custom written to handle the bandwidth and traffic scoobynet gets. With respect the MLR has basically EVO owners on it and seems quite everytime I have popped across. Where scoobynet has 16,000 members worldwide and even more who browse and dont post which equals thousands of hits an hour 24/7.

I maybe wrong but I doubt most off the shelf BB software would be upto the job.

Most bulletin board software that uses a proper database as storage would be up to the job, it's just a case of making sure you have enough CPU power on the database server to run the queries and enough CPU power on the web servers to execute the code. There may be more overhead with other boards, more features is more code to be run and more database queries executed for every page view in most cases.

AFAIK this board is custom front end written in ASP and stored in a MySQL database, the primary problem is upgrading would be transferring the custom database to another format, although most bulletin boards have methods for importing from other popular boards a custom board like this might be a problem.

The other alternative is to write the code to add the features to the existing board, but that can take a siginificant amount of time to create them and make sure they work correctly and don't increase the load on the servers too much.

Thumbs up

I think Simon has done an excellent job with this BB - it has lots of users and lots of posts, and it deals with both admirably. Wish I could say the same of my 'native' BB , although that is currently being upgraded I believe, as I type

What other features are needed here Claudius?

Well, I like the fact you can see who posted last (ie if you see I replied, you dont even bother reading it ), can get and send private messages, can quote properly (with it saying who the quote is from etc) and all the small additions like avatars, signatures etc etc. Come on, you know what I'm saying...

crisp, I never meant to say the MLR is a big as this, just that the software is better. I could have given dozens of other examples, but felt that the letters MLR would create more reactions

the board software is good, but the thread list looks crap in Opera 6.05 (a web browser for the uninitiated).

Cool

Claudius I wasnt having a go (makes a change ) just trying to make the point that the traffic on here is enormous compared to the MLR /22b/sidc forums, for example, so a different approach is needed. I agree there are few features which would be nice. The one feature I use the most on here though is the VIP list. If you add yourself then you can see which threads you have posted on and it takes into account threads which have moved forums as well . If you then right mouse button and open in a new window you can keep your VIP window open and jsut refresh it .
