Default Running in and Remap questions...

Ok so as advised I have put Millers running in oil into my newly built 2.1. Searching about though I am reading different advice on when to change oil and to what viscosity/synth.
Also a running in map. I have been speaking to JGM and he has my ESL board ready it's just becoming a nightmare for us to organise when we can fit this. I'm suprised to read some people (in the past) didn't map theirs when running in when I've searched on here.

As long as someone is staying off of boost, why would you need a running in map?

you need a certain amount of boost to help bed the piston rings in. hence why a running in map is a good idea & ideally up to 4000rpm revs

Lol, it's tempting. I'm on a TD04 and yellows, so even if i did it wouldn't go anywhere.

Bob Rawle put a running-in map on mine, I was limited to 4000rpm for 1500 miles.

Thanks. Some say 1k. Did you vary the revs at all?
When did you change your oil/filter?

That's just it, it seems to vary. Some say use semi synth, others say use the cheapest oil you can find.

I plan to map, and always have but wonder what damage could be done if I kept it off boost. The reason I ask Is I am 40 odd miles from getting it mapped. JGM has offered to come to me but that could take me an eternity.

Ran mine in for 60 miles at 1 bar and 5500 rpm. Then dropped the oil and mapped properly. All good so far.

As in full mapped or run in? 1bar is high is it not?

the main issue on your particular car is that its not mapped to the current mods.. 2.1 and td04 being the obvious ones.. the maf will compensate for the extra air consumed by the 2.1 and counter balanced by the less air flow of the td04 as I presume you are currently on the standard 75 type r ecu.. so in theory it should be perfectly fine.. however considering you have just built a new engine, it would be predictable to assume the previous one expired.. for a reason.. that reason might still be there? maybe a duff maf, fuel pump, split in inlet pipe, could be numerous reason.. but its not ideal to assume all is okay... therefore regardless of whether you choose to run it in gently for 1000miles or thrash the **** off it.. it needs a map imho before you do either

Thanks Simon .
The original engine was fine, I pulled it out running and sold it on.

For peace of mind I'd always go with a running in map on a new build. It will allow you to use a little boost to bed the rings in properly & Simon will be able to make sure there are no issues.

Yes, I was allowed anything up to 4k for 1500miles.
Changed oil and filter when it went for it's proper map.

On initial start up I ran mine with standard injectors and with cheapish semi synth. I ran it up to temperature and did a hundred miles building up the revs gently, then called Racedynamix to come fit the ESL. I changed the injectors the day before he arrived (it ran like a dog) It had a live map and I ran it around for few days then changed the oil and filter again with more cheapo semi synth (don't forget to prime the filter and oil pump each oil change)
I fitted a magnetic sump plug, I found some very fine swarf almost dust like on the magnetic tip. Ive been told that a little wear is desirable during the break in process hence not using premium oil.
On the recommendation of the builder I did few more hundred miles to bed the rings in before meeting Duncan at the rolling road

I just wasn't prepared to take the risk having spent so much on the build. I know there's no way I could be disciplined enough not to drive it off boost for
a 1000mls

I think I will change the oil at 100 miles and again at 500. Is it best to use running in oil throughout this?
I definitely want it mapped, for peace of mind because I want to push it a little every so often, not hard, but enough to bed the rings in.

Just my 2c worth, keep it under 4000rpm and vary the pressure as much as possible. For 2000km.
