Default Gear Box oil change now crunch

Hi, I have a impreza wrx sti type r v6 with the Manuel 5 speed dccd box. Iv just changed my gear box oil to Motel gear 300 75w-90 100% synthetic and have noticed i have a crunch when accelerating hard going from 3rd into 4th. To me this sounds as if i have a damaged synchro or something but it wasn't doing it before i switched oil. The cars only done about 60,000 miles and i dont know what oil was original in the box as it was a fresh import from sva imports.

Has anyone had any problems with Motel gear 300 and im a better off getting some gear box oil from subaru and changing it to see if this helps before getting a garage to look into the box ??

Thanks

we had a crunch of gears going from 2nd to first when the car was still rolling forward approaching a mini round about.
Changed the gearbox oil to Castrol Syntrax and it cured it.
We have a standard UK Impreza Classic Turbo 1999.

Sounds like whatever oil that was in there before may have been masking a problem, or preventing it from getting worse.

I would throw some Castrol Universal aka Castral Syntrax into the box. Cleared the same fault on my old STI V4.

That's odd. I always recommend the Gear 300 as it seems to work all the time with the DCCD set up, which can be fussy.

Yes i got it from you couple weeks back.. Seems to be really good oil it makes the gear changing a bit lighter its just all of a sudden 3rd to 4th has got a grind when accelerating hard. other then that driving normally it seems fine

Hi

I'm not really sure, that's what I always recommend for the DCCD boxes as it's always been fine before. You could try something like the Millers CRX NT or Red Line 75w90 GL5 NS.

Tim

Have you actually used this yourself in a DCCD car?
Its ok saying that it should be ok but I know from experience how well Castrol Syntrax suits these gearboxes. non DCCD that is, but it did cure the 3rd to 4th crunch at speed)

None of us here have an Impreza, but we have dealt with them for years, with DCCD, and have not had a problem with it before. Yes, Syntrax/Universal is well known to work well in a normal Impreza box, but that isn't a DCCD box.

So will Syntrax/Universal be ok to put in my dccd box to see if that stops the crunch or is that just for a normal box ??

Its odd how it was ok until i changed the oil unless there was some thick oil in there to cover something up

Thanks

There could have been something in the box to cover it up, that would explain why the gear shifts are easier with the Gear 300. People will often use the Red Line Shockproof oils to cover up that kind of thing. Any idea what colour the oil that came out was? Red or Blue would make me think it was a Shockproof oil. If it's the normal amber colour, it could have been something like Millers CRX NT 75w-140, but it's harder to tell if it's not red or blue.

Cheers

That's a pretty old thread, I don't remember writing our bit there, it could have been Guy. I'm pretty sure I've spoken to Motul about the DCCD boxes since then and they recommended the Gear 300. If you go onto the Motul look up guide, they recommend Gear 300 for the gearbox and Gear 300LS for the diff (if you look at the 2.5sti, they don't mention DCCD on the 2.0sti), 90PA isn't mentioned now. 90PA is just a diff oil though, it's not designed for gearboxes.

Cheers

Yes im thinking something was put in there to cover it up. It drives fine normally its only when i accelerate hard it crunchs into 4th. So you recommend trying red line shockproof ??

It could be worth trying the Lightweight Shockproof, they often sort out gearbox issues.
