Im hoping someone can help and its not be just being a spastic but am I right in thinking that the rear discs should just pull off of the hubs or just you have to do something else before the discs come off

handbrake adjusted then yes,
Im sure there are a couple of M8 threads you can pop 2 bolts in to use as a puller.

 

Two wee threaded holes find appropriate bolt and screw in evenly. Disc will come off.

 

yes just pull off, but handbrake shoes can hold them on, these can be wound in from the back by removing rubber plug and using a flat screwdriver in hole on star shaped adjuster

 

If handbrake is off and the wheel will rotate by hand freely then handbrake should be released enough for it not to catch the disc, as said above if it still has friction as you rotate the wheel then the shoes will need adjusting in, after that is done tap the outside edge of the centre of the disc with a hammer a few times to knock any build up of dust free ( don't hit the actual disc, just the centre ) nothing brutal but a good quick knock all around the disc usually helps, don't force it off if it won't come or you may do damage to the shoes or shoe kit inside the disc, and if its an Sti the parts ain't cheap!

 

Not if theres a lip on the inner drum surface. Best practise is to wind the adjustment all the way off the handbrake shies

 

the 2 bolts worked a treat to push the disc off
