Red face

Hi

I've noticed on my MY00 that after a good thrashing the power steering whines quite noticably. Don't seem to have this problem if I drive like a coffin dodger.

Anyone else find this? Anyone offer an explanation / resolution?

cheers

Neil

Neil,
I had this on the blackbeast (MY94 WRX Wagon)

If I drove sensibly then it was Ok, if I gave it some beans it whined.

I topped up Powersteering fluid and that seemed to sort it out for a while, until the fluid got low again.

have just had car serviced and 'steering rack gaitor' was replaced, so i don't know if that was the cause.

Could also be power steering pump.

Sounds like it could be air in the power steering pump/fluid? Also check the level of the PS fluid and top up if low??

My WRX has a slight fluid leak, and if it gets low the the pump whines. It's ok when the fluid is topped up, though. Have you checked the level?

Neil,

other replies are inline with my experience, the fluid escapes through the O-ring of the fluid resevoir which is in the middle at the front of the engine bay. If you look at that, you'll probably see some fluid gathering in a channel on the block.
Change the O-ring first if anything at all. 2quid as opposed to over a ton.

Neil,

Exact same on my MY99 UK car.

Took it to the dealer and had power steering pump and reservoir changed under warranty.

Suggest you do the same. It is not a mechanical fault as such, it is resonance in the reserrvoir.

If your dealer says no way on warranty let me know and I will give you my reg. so they can refer back to my claim.

An IM technician was sent out to look at my car and handled the warranty side. I remember he had to write a report on it.

Regards
IanF

Someone had the same problem on the ring trip, but that was with older fluid and we thought that changing the fluid may help, also worth noting that STi2's have a small raditor installed to cool the powersteering fluid, wheras all others rely on a length of pipe running the width of the radiator and back in a loop.
