Cheapest way id say is to find a second hand apexi ecu and have that mapped but your still talking about £350 for the ecu (£100 extra for the hand controller if required) plus mapping time.

Your ecu will be a 3 plug. 99 - 00 are 4 plug. smelling petrol when starting from cold is pretty normal no so when warm tho. possible lambda sensor problem maybe? Connect black plugs under dash to check for fault codes. Check out the air filter too. could be clogged...

If yours is pre sept 98 then it will be a 3 plug Ecu and not interchangeable with 99/00 ECUs.
It depends on your budget I suppose, but mapping the 98 isn't big bucks. The ESL board is 295GBP+VAT for the hardware.

The connectors are under the dash, above the pedals, might be tucked away if never used before, black and green. lambda is in the downpipe, behind the turbo. 3 wires sticking out of it. when dead it will throw a cel and code but if dying then maybe not. ive been driving around with mine broken and only got a cel on at motorway speed after about 20mins.
S reg 98uk should have an 8s ecu.
