Default 4WD vs RWD

What are your views?

My current impreza is RWD with a welded diff and to be quite honest im having thoughts about turning it into 4wd again.

I cant use the power in anything other than dry conditions. Any little dampness etc the wheels spin all the way up to and including 5th (when boost hits) Kinda scary when you go to overtake a lorry and you end up wheel spinning @ 80mph! Even got beat my BMW 330D from a red light !

So my question is basically is 4wd any better? Ive never been in a 4wd car myself. Do they still grip when boost kicks in? What are they like in the wet?

Subaru made the impreza 4wd for a reason mate, put it back to how it should be and start enjoying it without worrying every time you overtake a lorry.

Would imagine a RWD decent powered impreza would be fun, for a while. 4WD is the way forward though fella if you want more grip.

I'd be tempted to go and try a normal Scooby first before you commit to anything.

You may want to think about selling the car as is as a RWD Impreza might command a premium and then you could buy a 4WD one and pocket the cash. Just food for thought.

As above sell it as a rwd and maybe look at one with DCCD. I understand getting the back end out is fun, but there's something even more special about losing all 4 wheels .

The weight distribution is a bit poor for RWD, they are better suited for 4WD, just make sure it's DCCD

Or get the suspension set up looked at specialist,,,,, you would be surprised what a warn rear suspension set up can do to a car

My old BMW was a lot easier to get sideways before I changed the rear trailing arm bushes for new ones but when I did get the worse out I didn't have to panic with it

Oh and welded diff makes most cars drive like crap when parking ect, get a LSD and suspension sorted then go from there

A remapped 330d can push out some serious torque in the region of 400+, you need a pretty special impreza to be playing with one of those, add to that the fact it was built to run rear wheel drive and the subaru wasn't, it's no suprise you were handed your a$$.

Sounds like you need to stiffen up your rear end with fat anti-roll bar, solid drop links, suspension and geo set up, it's probably set up for drifting, some decent tyres might help too.

To make it a good RWD car is going to cost a lot of ££ for an STI RA diff / hubs / shafts / brakes etc

Im gonna put it back to 4WD I think having that stability would be a nice feeling.

Whats DCCD?

Driver controlled center differential, google it It changes the handling of the car totally and makes it more rear biased due to it not having a fixed power distribution point like a normal Subaru AWD gearbox.
