Speed sensor(vehicle speed sensor) can be the damaged, not sure if you are running OE ECU would check for errors via JGM guide

Hi thanks but sadly it's not an OE ECU, is's an HYDRA one, and remapped by JGM .

On a 1996 car, the speedo is run by a cable (speedo cable) rather than a wire, I think?

If so, it may have become diosconnected at either end, behind the dash or at the gearbox. Check that BOTH ends are in tight.

If they are, then it's the speedo head itself, time to look on ebay.....

And no, it's NOT an easy task to change for the later dials, sorry.

No chance. For a start mine is the newer electronic type, and secondly, neither are particularly easy to photograph, nor interesting.

The speedo cable will be black, stiff, about 10mm diameter, the ends plastic and wider. You normally pinch the ends to insert, or remove them. If you remove the clocks, you'll see the upper end.
two screws from the TOP of the binnacle, looking upwards, then three to hold the clocks in once that bezel is removed, just pull the clocks forwards.

If they come too easy, suspect the cable is unattached. Try pushing it back into place.

The lower end is best got at with the car on a ramp, but you CAN slide under with it jacked and properly supported.
