Advice on a Impreza STi
Hi Guys,
New here! Looking at buying a 1998 SUBARU STI limited edition version 5 Imported back in 2003 and just wanted to know what to look out for on them, Tried to look up the car and see what Turbo it uses and BHP and so on but not found much.
Thanks

He didn't say, "MY...", jsut metioned a year - so 1998 is fair enough.
i.e. as MY99/Version 5 ran from Sep. '98 to Aug. '99.
But as Matty says, post up pics of dash, engine and "Apllied model" code on the VIN plate - it'll be easy to corroborate all that to arrive at the correct MY...

The only thing that would worry me is the small amount of rust on the rear arches, because they rot from the inside out, so what seems like nothing on the outside can mean a major bill to sort it, as in £1k if you want it doing properly so it's not back next year.
May pass on it and keep looking.
What makes that a limited edition then....??
If the car is what you want and everything else is right then don't let a little bit of rust put you off. It's fixable, yes sometimes it can be far worse than first appears but it's always repairable. I've just had mine done.

I'd think about asking for an under bonnet shot for it. Post it on the thread and the more knowledgeable might be able to point out a few possible points.
A classic Sti just looks wrong to me without fog light covers

I would also like to know what makes it a limited edition!?
Regarding the rust I will look into it I think.
MattyB1983, if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost to repair the rear aches?

Looks about right to me. Coil pack set off to the right unlike V3&V4 where it's iun the centre. Standard air box with possible HKS panel filter due to the sticker.
Flaky crinkle red paint and a nice addition of some silicone hoses going from the header tank and radiator

As for a 2003 wrx they do look different but there are people out there that mix and match engines, heads and ancillaries etc which means it'll last about 10 miles. To be safe you might want to take it to a local specialist and have them check it over.

It's not a limited edition, I was being sarcastic...

Rust wise, with classics it's often far worse than it looks. The rust starts from inside the arch where you can't see, it's repairable but often needs new metal. Price wise, expect to pay £200 a side if its bad.

Good idea Ditch..
So, here's what mine looked like from the outside after a quick rub over with some sand paper...

A little bit of cutting and I found this...

A little bit more cutting and found this...

With some hard work, a welder and a spray gun she now looks like this...

From the outside it really didn't look bad, I actually thought a quick rub down, some rust treatment and a paint would surfice. However, as Ditch said its often worse than it looks. Remember though, it's always repairable.

Iv come across the same problem on my classic on both arches today broke my heart as was just playing around underneath and gave the bumper a knock and a huge lump of metal fell , it has been rusting on the outside so I was aware that it may need cut but the hole is ALOT larger than first anticipated , any one recommend the best way of doi g this? I have a small wig so welding is no prob.
