Hello everybody, ive just registered as a new scoobynet member.
ive just bought a 1997 type r and i am looking to change the suspension on it because they are way too hard for my liking ! whats on it at the momment are hks coilovers but they are solid even on the softest setting.
So my question is - does anyone now of anywhere that sells brand new p1 red struts and red springs ? as so ive read these are the best suspension setups for the classic impreza for somebody like me who wants comfort aswell as performance. Any Ideas would be much appreciated ??

 

Dealer only for the struts and springs , or you could go second hand.

 

The set up for the P1 was done by prodrive and designed for the uk roads. However, this was done over 12 years ago!

Have a look at the traders section and see the group buy for BC's. P1 owners replace there's with these for good reason.

What about adjustable koni inserts? I use those with P1 springs on a classic wrx.

What about the KYB AGX ? these are about £650 and are adjustable but i have no idea on how soft they can go ? Anybody know anything about these ?

Speak to bonesetter on here as he used to have them on his Type R he's gone with Bilstein/P1 spring combo.

Personally I would try and find some Bilsteins struts they are are quite rare but they come up occasionally on here,ebay or 22b.com.

I've a set fitted to my 98 Type R (standard springs) and they are sooooo much nicer than the original struts.

I have been looking into this recently as I dont want my car to be to hard for road use either.

Part of me would really like some coilovers but when I started thinking about it I started asking what is the point? I dont need a million and one damper settings and adjustable ride height as lets be honest (and I suspect most who fit coilovers for the road are the same) I will set it up the first time then it will be left it as is never to be touched again.

I have instead decided to stick with the standard style shocks (KYB excel G) get some decent springs (will no doubt go with Eibach but have also been looking at spax as they are significantly cheaper) that dont lower the car too much (looking at around 25-30mm) and have been searching for camber plates that fit with the standard suspension (as I would like to play with the settings and have found them cheaper than the standard top mounts) hopefully this will not comprimise the ride but will still be an upgrade over standard and should also fit into my budget restraints

I also looked into the adjustable KYB units but again it goes back to the coilover point once you have them where you want them would you ever touch them again? and if not then whats the point in having adjustable units?

 

Ive now just bought the kyb 33 series and tein springs new from camskill total price £387 . I hope they'll be what i want, that is nice for a 300 mile round trip with the missis and then good on the twists and bends for when im on my own. Fingers crossed !!!

 

The type 33's are the same as what I have been looking at so I am sure they will be fine that is as long as the drop on the springs isnt too large

 

They replace them because they are old, but actually the P1 set up (eibach springs of a bespoke prodrive rating allied to standard stiV dampers and a 50mm or so drop at the front) do work incredibly well on the UK roads.

I've owned a P1 from new and although I have exe-tc coilovers on it for track related japery they are not as good on the road when cruising as the P1 OEM was (and exe tc is way better than BC...).
