Default Difficult Gear change?

My car is just passed the 120K mark with the original gearbox but besides the normal Subaru problems of finding reverse 1st gear is getting worse to get into gear and you have to slide in between 2nd then 1st a few time or lift off the clutch when stationary. Basically the synchromesh in 1st and reverse is getting to be a PIA. Is it cheaper to just get a 2nd hand gearbox change not knowing if it will make it any better or have my box synchromesh rebuilt?

Silly question but if it does eventually need a 2nd hand gearbox could I fit a STI or WRX box on or would it all be the wrong gearing and confuse the Speedo?

Try some redline shockproof transmission oil from Opi oils, it's like syrup and I've heard from a few members who had synchro troubles and this stuff cured it

Cheaper option than a new box!

I've been thinking my gearbox is on the way out since sometimes selecting 1st gear and reverse won’t go in from stand still unless you double clutch or grind it in. But just come back from gearbox specialist and he recons that it may be a clutch problem not gearbox since 1st and reverse are trouble to get into when the engine is running but go in easy when off. The 1st gear issue is at lights after changing down then to neutral then its plays up trying to go back into 1st to pull away so have to pull away in 2nd sometimes. Reverse I’m told by other impreza classic owners can be temperamental.

I have bought 6L of smurf blood anti shock gear oil but now been told it wont make any difference.

Any bright ideas folks

I would disagree with your gearbox specialist. You dont need any syncro at all to move round the gears while the engines not running as nothings spinning. Does it go into 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th ok while running and stationary? If so kind of rules out the clutch as being the problem

Reckon a problem with the clutch master or slave cylinder or may be in need of a fluid change due to having absorbed moisture. I had 222000km on my 5 speed before it gave trouble . Also had that issue you describe on the new box and an over haul of the clutch hydrualic system cured it.

Not saying thats you problem just might be somewhere else to look

Well the problem persists. Had the redline shockproof oil put in gearbox and diff but still getting itermitant sticking of not going into 1st at at stand still unless you force it in you change to 2nd then force it in. Neither of which are ideal. The whole gear changs at abit clunky so looks like it may be clutch issue. Would they look at the hydrolics if they replaced the clutch and is it cheaper to buy a clutch myself then get the garage to fit it?

If you had used the Heavy, that would have made sense and possibly explained the issue, but as it's the Lightweight, I think the problems are due to something other than the oil.

Cheers

Tim

My car has similar issues, been told its the master and slave braking down, but I am
Expecting I need a box, mines only 68,000 and as far as I know it's been driven easy, no track, strip or launches

If going for another box try and get hold of a ty754 box out of an sti version 5/6 as they are the strongest of the classic gearboxes, the members/breakers on here should be able to help you out.
