Default Remap Advice (2003 WRX Blob Eye)

Hi All

Looking for some advice so have 2 questions really.

1. What sort of power/torque increase would a completely standard 2003 WRX look to achieve if remapped?

2. What upgrades/changes would see a much better power/torque increase following remapping?

I've contacted Duncan @ Race Dynamix so thought i'd ask here beforehand.

Cheers

if you are planning upgrades at a later date save yourself some money and do them first, that way you only pay for one remap.

Well if the power difference between with upgrades or without upgrades are significant then ill have the upgrades done straight away and then ask Duncan to sort the remap, just curious as to what i should expect from a completely standard car against a none standard one (and what upgrades are recommended).

sti injectors
sti intercooler
downpipe
uppipe
vf34/td05
3 port boost
walbro 255
330+bhp
similar torque
then save for a 6 speed do you an up the power!
the mods will cost you around£500 then a remap.
all depends on how far you want to take the car

there is a thread on here asking people what power they have got out of their wrx have a read through and you will see the sort of things that have been done and what power they achieved.Or talk to your mapper tell him what power you are hoping for and see what he suggests you do.

if you are going to fit a sti tmic you will need the sti bonnet scoop and undertray to get the max benefit.speak to harvey smith on here about headers and uppipe i think you need to change the standard sparkplug.Have fun and good luck to your wallet.

Do you have some magic arm twisting device you use?

Reckon you'd be looking at a bill closer to £1k than £500 for the parts.... oh, and some new brakes would be a good idea as well

I did some sums and came up with £960 for the parts, and car is in tomorrow morning for godspeed discs & kevlar pads all round, however once all the work above has been done i'll invest in some better pads

I made 280bhp and same lb/ft with the above + up-pipe at Powerstation on my old WRX wagon.

Indeed, 270-280 is quite cheap... 300+ gets very expensive!

The results tend to vary based on a number of factors. But 265-285bhp and the same if not more torque can be expected from a relatively standard car. A panel filter and cat back is the most I would do for this spec tbh. Another worthwhile investment for spool and power is to remove the up-pipe cat and replace with a decent up-pipe that is matched to the turbo.

Speaking from good and very bad experience, do what Graham advises. Stick to the 280 top limit and get a decat up pipe that is matched to the turbo from Harvey on here. I chased larger figures and spent thousands more than necessary and to this day I honestly believe my 03 WRX never made more than 320 bhp, if it made that. I reckon it may have been as low as 310 bhp and that was with a lot of mods and the VF34. LOL.

Yes but you're only looking at 10-15bhp or so gain in peak power. However, the PPP map brings in boost quite late so there's room for some extra grunt at lower RPMs so you get a bit more area under the curve.

The PPP doesn't always make the power it claims (it is after all a generic map) so it could be worth putting yours on a rolling road to see what power it's really making, the further it is from the 265bhp quoted, the more gains you'll see from a custom map.

£500 to go from ~220bhp to ~270-280bhp (or less if you're patient on eBay for parts and have access to an OpenPort cable - £120 in my case ).

£1250 to go from ~270-280bhp to 320bhp

...as suggested above, best off trading in and getting an STi at that point (IMHO) where you'd gain stronger engine, better brakes, 6 speed 'box and 320bhp with a simple remap.

The TD04 starts to go out of efficiency much above the boost levels in the PPP map... there is some headroom though but not a lot.

I must be getting old as I seem to be one of the few who quite like the less aggressive map of the PPP. I started off with a more aggressive map on mine but got a bit fed up with it in traffic so reverted to a hybrid between that and the PPP - it's pretty docile in traffic and when I want to have fun I'm up in the power band anyway

i to dont mind the ppp map still aggresive enuff for me and drivable i will prob keep mine standard for now (it is a family car lol) will put it on rolling road to see wat it has got in may then may think about a few mods only to get it to 265 qouted by prodrive.by the way mine has been fitted with hawkeye 4 pot brakes at front and 2 pot at back(red with white writing) is this a good upgrade or is it worth going for the sti brembo's?

Some of the PPP cars make or slightly exceed the quoted BHP figure - all depends on how well it suits a particular engine.

Re the brakes, all newage WRX are 4 pot up front, 2 pot rears so swapping to newer WRX brakes is not worthwhile. Brembos make a difference but you need bigger wheels for them to fit. Best off updating the pads and sticking with the stock brakes for a road car IMHO - I can lock the brakes with mine which means the braking available exceeds the grip available so only real advantage is reducing fade and getting to the point of lock up faster.

That's the route I took with my 03 WRX. Plenty of power & torque as a daily driver......who am I kidding you'll always want more power lol

Seriously though it does me proud and I wont spend any more on it

£500 if off the back of a lorry !! My exhaust was £1000 alone, was also quoted around £600 for a decent turbo, so would think this lot would be around £2k If I was going for 330+ I'd be getting an sti, otherwise 285 is a nice safe number for a wrx, also if you're going to 330+ start saving for a new clutch and gearbox.
