Default grinding noise...gearbox???

I've just replaced my brokern gearbox with a secondhand unit today, but now as I slow down below 15mhp I hear a grinding noise, sounds like a bearing, but can't tell if its from the clutch bearing that was ok, or from the replacement box, wierd that it only does it at low rpm, as soon as I toutch the gas a tiny bit the noise goes.
Any ideas, please.......

ive got the same problem,, been told it could be a main bearing inside the gearbox,, try pressing the clutch in and see if it goes... and drive it and pop it out of gear with no clutch and see if the noise goes..

The noise stops when I apply the clutch or take out of gear, it sounds like the back of the box, but sound does travel lol,,,, I'm hoping its the centre diff or transfer bearings as ill just put my old rear end in this new (secondhand) box.

Just need some info from others to see if its worth swapping.

its sounds the same as mine, i spoke to a guy that rally's wrx's, and strips them and re-builds them..
and he took my car for a drive, and he seemed to think its the gearbox, and he even showed me a gearbox shaft with a nackered bearing, saying he repaired one with the same fault...

Main transfer case bearing gone id say - big ****** at the back and takes a lot of load makes a horrible grinding rumbling noise - prob low oil level sometime in the past - ive taken 2 out and you wouldnt believe how rough it is when you spin it in some degreaser - about 30 quid if i mind right.

iain.

Is that the one that's on the centre diff at the front, or the tapered one in the back? Also there is 2 more tapered ones on the transfer shaft...

I'm thinking of just swapping the whole back end for my old one that I no is ok.

I just hope that fixes it, as I hate working on my back lol.

its the big ball race on the very back of the transfer box that sits in the cutout on the transfer box casing - if youve got a good transfer box deffo fit that then maybe repair the one you take out - its worth it just to play with the knackered bearing.
