Nasty grinding noise under breaking from the front left. Sounds like worn out breaks (metal on metal) but it only happens at slow speeds and doesn't happen all the time.
Any ideas?
Car is a 98 (NS) Legacy GTB
It's in for a service in a couple of weeks so no big worries but I'd appreciate your thoughts

if its standard pads they have a little bit of metal that when the disk wears down it touches the disk to make a noise. A kind of audible warning to change your pads.

ok, I'll take a look.
But the brake warning light isn't on...

It may be a shot wheel bearing

Would that be more apparent under breaking?
Now getting a touch of wheel wobble as well

It can be. Depending what brakes you have, a worn bearing can allow the disc to be pushed to one side under braking and grate on the caliper. Can also be responsible for the wheel wobble.
