Origionally posted under Suspension, but due to lack of response, It's been re-posted here................

I'm trying to talk the wife into letting me have another Scooby (Had one last year, but made the mistake of selling it).

She found that the WRX suspension was far to hard around town, so I was wondering if the UK spec is any softer.

OR

If putting a set of Koni adjustables on a jap spec Scoob would allow me to set it up to her liking.

What do you reckon is the best solution.

UK spec suspension is probably the most comprimising out of them all. Very very easy to live with around town and I would say that it is no harder than a standard mondeo.

Blowdog,

that must have been 1 hard mondeo you went out in then!

I had to point out to my missus that whilst you edo feel more bumps, holes in the road etc, you gain when going round corners in that you dont have to struggle to stay in your seat as much. After that she likeld it a lot more!

Not very, I punched its lamps out!

What is 'er indoors used to?

My missus has driven our 205 Gtis (1.9 and 1.6), 205 Junior, the Renault 19 16v, Peugeot 306 turbo diesel and VW Golf Gti. She's never mentioned the stiffness, so it may all depend where your coming from.

I have a std UK MY00.

I had a WRX, and she was complaining that she needed a sports bra everytime we went out in it.

I want another, but she's wants a softer ride (Ooh Err).

As we've got a nipper know, she also doesn't want him bringing his lunch up every time we go out (whci is a fair point).

Any plausable excuses as too, why I should get another would be much appreciated

Scott,

I got a UK MY00 Scoob after having a 2 door MGF, purely for the nipper that was on the way.

No worries with suspension at all, the back seats are still untouched! Only complaint is the Scoobysport BB being too loud!

The missus has never said the suspension is too hard, nipper now 1 year old and no complaints from her!

cheers,

greg

Cool

Scott,

I had this problem, my wife suffers from spinal problems and the UK car is harder than any other car we have owned, including Mondeo's etc, (in my opinion Cem). Previous car was a Focus Zetec with 205/50 ZR16 rubber and the Scoob is no firmer in the corners but not as forgiving over potholes and ridges.

Saying that its only potholes and ridges where she feels its too firm, on normal A & B roads there isn't much of a problem. We had thin foam pads cut for the seat to give a bit of extra cushioning for her.

Finally have a word with Pete Croney at Scoobysport, the Leda height and damping adjustable suspension can be set up for comfort rather than handling or any compromise to suit your needs. They can get a Scoob to ride like a Lexus if required.

Aha! The new model strikes again! Way superior in this department.

Whatever you do, do not get an STI RA! I loved it, bird would have happily pushed it off a cliff. I too am considering a UK car now - also in the hope of better fuel consumption, sigh, boring I know. Anyone got a 98 UK car for sale?

ok, ill rephrase that then. My experiences with a Mondeo are with an ST24, which is faar from hard, I would also say that the UK car suspension is one of the softest I have seen when compared to others of its ilk.

Then again, I drive a car which rattles my fillings out everytime.

Scot,

It's not to bad, we trawl all over the place including long trips to France and alwatys get out as fresh as a daisy. Also have two nippers one who is prone to travel sickness.

She can do 10 to 15 miles in a normal car before she feels car sick, but in the Scoob (Standard UK MY99) she is never sick, because you don't get the wallowing you do normally. (unless I drive like an absolute loon)

I get some complaints about the ride quality(over undeven/potholed surfaces) and its definitely worse than my last mondeo V6 (and her 206).

The kids don't complain, just my wife!

I've been thinking about fitting adjustable suspension myself. Set up nice and hard for normal driving, but how long does it take to put it into 'Lexus' mode for the weekend trip with the family??

Yo dudes...thing is that it's the spring that decides how stiff the suspension is...a stiff damper will make it more crashy, but you can't make it softer without changing the springs.

These adjustable struts shouldn't be "adjusted" more than a given amount of clicks either way, since the damper is there to keep the car from bouncing on the spring....and an under/overdamped car can be really dangerous in the wrong conditions.

Hope I made any sense...

Cheers

(the stock turbo suspension was way soft for my taste...but I'm NOT into comfy wallowy rides)

Cool

Jerry,

But if you can alter the preload on the springs and the damper settings on the shocks would this not make the ride softer?

You need an adjustable platform for the springs as in the Leda C package.

But then again I am no expert in this field. LOL

The Leda B is adjustable as well...

Leda C is a B strut with gas preassurised oil (separate gas tank).

Problem is that the "preload" is only affecting the height of the car (and balance left/right), not stiffness, the spring is unaffected by that (unless it's progressive, and the preload is set so extreme that it's compressed).

Preload is used on a car with adjustable struts to balance the car, to get the same "weight" on left/right wheel.

So does Pete use softer springs on this conversion then?

Enter Mr Croney please

Scott,

My WRX was way too hard (for me anyway). Changed to full UK kit (springs and shocks). Now much better. That's about all I can say really!

Don't let having kids get in the way of your suspension choice, I've got a uk my00 with the prodrive suspension pack and my kids (6 months and 2.5yrs) both love the car and fall asleep very quickly.

Okay they do tend to wake up when I'm having a go round corners (before anyone starts raving about screaming round corners with kids in the car, I'm not!) coz their heads bang against the sides of their chairs! oops!

Buy the woman a sports bra (to save distractions, ) and have nice suspension!

Neil,

How much did it cost for the UK set-up?

Cheers

Ive got a UK my99 and tried the new BUGEYED UK model vastly quieter inside, little road noise and a lot smoother suspension.
You will need though -:
1) A PPP through as being slighly heavier suffers with slight power lack (engine is more progressive rather than hit you in the back)

2) Lowering kit its like its stilts

3) front light conversion

Cool

You could always get a set of 15inch wheels with the 55profile tyres on then the ride will be softer (wheels fitted to pre-98 cars)

My wife hasn't moaned at all about the suspension in my MY96 UK wagon... the previous car (MR2 Turbo) she never stopped moaning about.. if anything the Scooby is better than her Vauxhall Corsa!
Also my 6month old daughter is a sleep within minutes..... so cannot be that bumpy...
why not test drive some...

JGM

PS : If you are buying a new car then perhaps 15inch wheels would not be an option as they'd look pants...

Looking at an MY95 with Prodrive Performance Pack on Saturday.

Hopefully it'll be the one for me.
