Default STI ver 2 with open deck engine ??

well the STI is in for a rebuild, but came to a stop when found out it had an open deck block ??

contacting a local subaru dealer shed no light as to what block it had, or what it's out of..

now here's some strange things..
i have a GC8C4ED version 2 STI, confirmed.
EJ20GDW5PE should be a version 2 STI 555 model ?? mines a red STI !!!

anyone understand what the markings in the block are and what they mean ??

like AB28 and 28AB 22222 stamped in the center top of the block,
or what about 74 4 6 on the left half and 74 4 8 on the right half,
also stamped near the gearbox is 504336 (i assume engine number)

anyone know a way to find out why i have an open deck block in a closed deck block car..

it's a MY96 P reg STI version 2..!!!

I dont think your car should have had the closed deck. My version 2 555 sti doesnt have one. I think the early RA versions had them. Also i am sure the applied model code for both the version sti and the vesrion 2 555 sti was the same.

it's strange the code as the version 2 STI should be EJ20GDW5PH mine in 5PE making it a 555 which it's clearly not..
from the same website they say version 1 and 2 had closed deck, also scooby clinic and area52 say this, yet SC did say it's possible to have an open deck fitted to a late version 2, yet A52 said not..
most changes to scoobies happened around 97 98 when they phased in and out different everything..

i'm stumped, with no jap history, and a susposed rebuild from SC which can't be backed up, i lost as to why and what it should be and have..

mni tnx OM..

they claim not to keep records, or not on PC,
i asked if they remembered the car, being a red STI not common are they ??
said 'vaguely remember it' once i questioned the open deck block it was hard to remember it, and what work had been done etc etc..they said we have over 60 cars outside..!! so not a lot of help there

Quite possible it's not the original engine either being that it's a fairly old car now

unless you car going for a min of 450+ bhp, then a open deck should be fine.

The catherine and ken site has quite a few flaws in it..........

Shaun

PS

If I remember correctly the cars with closed deck blocks had solid lifters and had the rev limit upped to 7500 ( the WRX RA did). What's your rev limit / redline.

Shaun

I'm not sure thats entirely true. My car is a V1 WRX (not an RA), has a CDB (original engine) and had a 7k limit on the OE ECU. A lot of the boggo standard early WRXs had CDBs.

Thats correct, early WRX's used a CDB and had the 7k rev limit....The rev limit was raised to 7.5k on the wrx and sti RA's, 95/96 cars...aswell as the MY97-on WRX's

Especially with Imprezas. Surely there has never been a car built that has so many variations and so much myth surrounding it

There cant be a person alive that knows everything about these cars.

Is it the same with the dark side??

Do Mitsubishi Evo owners have the same problem or do they have a model evolution like a Ford Escort ?

Which is pretty simple as I used to have one LOL

As somebody said, open deck block good for 450 bhp any day of the week!
We've built a number of stroker versions all going well.
