it can be done but theres alot of work involved, assuming you have a sport and want to fit a turbo engine? you need to swap over the ecu and wiring loom and everything
it will cost a friggin' bomb to transplant a turbo into a non-turbo, and get it working.
I remember my mate transplanting a turbo engine into a non-turbo toyota supra a few years back. but that was because he bought a high mileage na supra for £5k, and then had the engine dropped in for £3.5k, and turbo supra's back then were still going for £12-13k, so it was a wise move.
I cannot imagine it will be particularly cost effective with a classic impreza...

i actually done this a few year back and used full 2004 sti, transplanted everythig i could including the dash and interior, was a CAN WE project and needed a fair bit of help, cost involved was ALOT more then what most people would think, and yes it's not something your gonna get any money back on, just wanted to see if was poss, got harveys headers/up pipe on it and was mapped at 340, had tarox 6 pot conversion on the front and left the huBs on the back.
people would spy the hubs and laugh then i would take off lol
NOT COST EFFECTIVE AS NEEDED A FULL DONOR CAR NOT JUST ENGINE

Me friend's just bought a Sport which is the same year as my STI.
We parked them next to each other to compare and the differences are amazing. When you start looking they are very different animals.

Transplanting any different sized engine will require at a minimum a remap.
You really have to bite the bullet and swap for a turbo car if you want any meaningful power increase. The cost per bhp will be much less than any other options available.

you need too much stuff when transplanting a turbo engine into a non turbo car. the cost is prohibitive unless
1. you have more money than sense
2. you are attempting it as a project for the satisfaction of doing it.

a turbo can be fitted to a non-turbo engine with sellotape... serously though it is possible to modify a non-turbo engine and fit a turbo to it, i've seen it done by a guy called Mr Sheen on here and www.scoobyireland.com
