can you swap a turbo engine for a non turbo?

Is it possible to swap a 1996 impreza turbo engine over with a non turbo one without causing problems with the E.C.U?

Jason0186 12 April 2011 08:08 PM

No the ecu knows the turbo is there and if its not there the ecu will stop engine working.

Jason

dabow 12 April 2011 08:08 PM

why would you want to do that?

it wont work on the ecu like, but why????
sell the turbo & get a sport, easy

Jason0186 12 April 2011 08:09 PM

Ive got a non turbo and want a turbo.

wrx fifer 12 April 2011 08:11 PM

it can be done but theres alot of work involved, assuming you have a sport and want to fit a turbo engine? you need to swap over the ecu and wiring loom and everything

Mrchips 12 April 2011 08:14 PM

Sell up and buy a u turbo, my bro is selling one MY00, £1800. lovely motor, mica red

Loco 12 April 2011 08:17 PM

it will cost a friggin' bomb to transplant a turbo into a non-turbo, and get it working.

I remember my mate transplanting a turbo engine into a non-turbo toyota supra a few years back. but that was because he bought a high mileage na supra for £5k, and then had the engine dropped in for £3.5k, and turbo supra's back then were still going for £12-13k, so it was a wise move.

I cannot imagine it will be particularly cost effective with a classic impreza...

then theres the dvla side, and re-classing as a turbo
but agrea, it can be done. loom/ecu complete engine ect, but the exspence and hasle, sell it & buy turbo

I have a 1.6 GL on 95 M-Reg. Whats it worth towards a turbo?

Jason

SwissTony 12 April 2011 08:34 PM

About £700-800 at guess

Jason0186 12 April 2011 08:38 PM

Not bad but would anyone pay that as it's only worth what someone will pay for it?

Jason

i actually done this a few year back and used full 2004 sti, transplanted everythig i could including the dash and interior, was a CAN WE project and needed a fair bit of help, cost involved was ALOT more then what most people would think, and yes it's not something your gonna get any money back on, just wanted to see if was poss, got harveys headers/up pipe on it and was mapped at 340, had tarox 6 pot conversion on the front and left the huBs on the back.
people would spy the hubs and laugh then i would take off lol

NOT COST EFFECTIVE AS NEEDED A FULL DONOR CAR NOT JUST ENGINE

Reef 12 April 2011 08:56 PM

Me friend's just bought a Sport which is the same year as my STI.
We parked them next to each other to compare and the differences are amazing. When you start looking they are very different animals.

Jason0186 12 April 2011 09:11 PM

How hard would it be to put a biggeer non turbo engine into it? Is the any guides on this?

Jason

saiklon 13 April 2011 06:46 AM

Transplanting any different sized engine will require at a minimum a remap.
You really have to bite the bullet and swap for a turbo car if you want any meaningful power increase. The cost per bhp will be much less than any other options available.

Jason0186 13 April 2011 11:40 AM

Is there a guide anywhere on doing this?

Jason

kevin wrx 13 April 2011 12:39 PM

the only other option is buy a donor car and swap it all over, like a turbo thats had a rear smash maybe.

Jason0186 13 April 2011 03:20 PM

Where can i buy one of them from, any websites ect

kevin wrx 14 April 2011 10:49 AM

try ebay

Gear Head 14 April 2011 04:58 PM

Jason

Can I ask why you are considering this? The cost will be stupidly high.

bigsinky 14 April 2011 05:09 PM

you need too much stuff when transplanting a turbo engine into a non turbo car. the cost is prohibitive unless

1. you have more money than sense
2. you are attempting it as a project for the satisfaction of doing it.

windyboy 14 April 2011 05:45 PM

a turbo can be fitted to a non-turbo engine with sellotape... serously though it is possible to modify a non-turbo engine and fit a turbo to it, i've seen it done by a guy called Mr Sheen on here and www.scoobyireland.com

Not through choice!.... the engine died and I been offered a free replacement but it's a non turbo!

Jason0186 14 April 2011 09:42 PM

I'm a mechanic so I don't pay labour. And I want a project, I considering getting a 2.5 N/A engine and ecu from a legacy cause it's a straight swap plug and play.
