I'm with John.
OK, it might not have the raw, sraight line acceleration, but once rolling, the Sport is excellent.
Then you get John behind the wheel of his and I shut my eyes

Cheers

Jerry, your new so i'll give you a bit of advice.
There is nothing lowly about an Impreza Sport, they can keep up with a UK turbo in the real world no problems at all.
Without doubt THE most underated car on UK roads.
Cut the lowly mate, just makes you look like you are sucking up to the turbo guys.
LOL

Ignore JohnF, he could drive a lada round a track faster than most of us
. Back in the real world, us mere mortals need a turbo to counter our pants driving ability!
Let us know what you get.

Welcome to another Impreza owner. That makes you a minority on this BBS I think!
If you join the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club (SIDC) you'll see in the latest edition of the club mag "True Grip" that one of our number is canvassing opinion on setting up a "Sport Register" within the club so you can be even more elitist!
I have a MY00 turbo now, but I agree with JF the Sport I had was a revelation in itself.
Don't put yourself down, get along and muck it with everyone else when meets come up.

whilst my car was having a service i was given a brand new, impreza sports wagon, is this the same thing ?, as it was terrible after driving my turbo, 6000 revs and still only doing about 50 mph, however, brakes, clutch and control seems very good.
anyway loooking forward to getting something better is part of the fun of owning cars, whatever they are, enjoy what u have got while you have it !

Just spent 30 or so minutes browsing though' the site, there's lots of emotion etc especially re Top Gear, the Evo rival and so on. Well, I've got a lowly non turbo W reg 5dr Sport and it's the most brilliant machine I've ever driven (which means I've got the esctasy to come when I get my turbo). I've had Audi A3, Golf GTi etc but the grip and handling of this machine is astonishing so despite the lack of the awesome punch the turbo gives you the fact that you don't need to slow down for corners means you can leave loads of so called fast stuff way behind. So, as far as the new one is concerned, if it drives as well, or better, than my lowly Sport and on top of that it's a turbo I will love it. In fact, I'm starting to like the look of the new one and thinking about it the Evo looks too much like a fashion accessory.

Jerry,
I have just changed from a 4 door Sport to a 5 door Turbo.I thought my Sport was an excellent motor, but admit to feeling sometimes like a poor relation to the Turbos. There's little, if any disrespect for Sport owning SIDC/Scoobynet members, it's still a Scooby at the end of the day.
The Sport can definitely hold its own, and it's a big mistake for anybody to right it off as a 'wish it was', without driving one.It put plenty a grin on my face, that's for sure.I have to remember that it was the first stepping stone in Scooby ownership for me, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Enjoy, and be proud!

Hey guys, thanks for all the interesting, encouraging and amusing replies. Suddenly I don't feel so lonely. Reckon melpaul might have had a brick on the floor which got under the accelerator. I might have a duff stop watch but my 5 dr Sport at 15k miles now 0-60's in under 9 secs but it was noticeably tight for the first 2k.
