Just got off my drive and round the corner before pushing the button for the sqooshers (technical term). They worked, then stopped working, shortly followed by copious amounts of smoke coming from the stalk. Cue panic, and me jumping out to disconnect the battery (ignition off didn't work).

Anyhow, not sure what caused it, but in the process of trying to see how melted the cable was, I've broken most of the stalk.

My car is an import, so, the wipers are on the left of the wheel. Anyone know were I can get a replacement stalk for a 2001 bug? anyone breaking one?

Needs to be the left stalk, that works the wipers etc.

Sounds like you had a narrow escape.
At least you had the sense to disconnect the battery
