It's simple just be nice enough keep it insured in your name and am sure he will be ok getting back without a bump.
The other option is to insure him at your address with a UK insurer.
They won't insure him beause it's on UK plates it has to be on Austrian plates.

Hi to all,
thanks for the advices.
I'm now sitting in Munich in a hotel instead of beeing alreday in W Yorkshire. First the flight had a delay and then we had a technical breakdown and after 2 aborted starts I had to stay in Munich. Plane will leave this afternoon.
Hopefully everything will work for the rest of the trip/ my "shopping trip" to the UK.

Your policy provides the minimum cover you need by law for civil liability to other people while your vehicle is used in: 1. any country which is a member of the European Union; or
2. any other country which the Commission of the European Union approves as meeting the requirements of Article7(2) of the European Community Directive on Insurance of Civil Liabilities arising from the use of motor vehicles (number. 72/166/ CEE). These countries are named on your certificate of insurance.
If the minimum insurance needed by law in Great Britain is higher than the minimum needed in the country where your vehicle is being used, we will provide the minimum needed in Great Britain. You do not need a ‘green card’ to take your vehicle to the countries described above if you take your certificate of insurance with you.
