Does he reside in Austria? And planing to take the car back there? if so I think he would need to purchase insurance in/from his country of residence.?

It's simple just be nice enough keep it insured in your name and am sure he will be ok getting back without a bump.
The other option is to insure him at your address with a UK insurer.

They won't insure him beause it's on UK plates it has to be on Austrian plates.

I did it in my name for a customer who bought a new spec c. He drove it back to Germany and I left it insured untill he registered it. If anything had happend I would of just claimed in my name and charged him the dfference in my premium for the next year. He was a good guy tho and the last thing I wanted to do was leave him stuck in the UK with a Brandnew spec c.

Hi to all,

thanks for the advices.
I'm now sitting in Munich in a hotel instead of beeing alreday in W Yorkshire. First the flight had a delay and then we had a technical breakdown and after 2 aborted starts I had to stay in Munich. Plane will leave this afternoon.
Hopefully everything will work for the rest of the trip/ my "shopping trip" to the UK.

How about Temporary insurance? those that do up to a months cover... they just insure driver on chosen car. Granted its over the odds, but is good for short term UK only cover.

I'm not sure if the short term insurance covers EU use, but it may. You'd have to check..

He is a brave man driving it back to Austria with the current weather as I will bet it is currently on summer tyres.

I drove a RHD 03 wrx from wrights motors in the UK all the way to Sicily. On UK plates. They kept it insured for a month and I paid the difference. Simple!
