My window has always had a 'clunk' as it has been put down. This happened about half way down and then the window would continue on the way down without further problems. It would be fine on the way up but sometimes not be as tight as it could be on the rubber seal around the door frame without opening and closing the door.

A few days ago it was on the way down and it seemed to be stuck. The window stopped moving down and jerked up and down a little for a bit. Nasty noises (groaning) ensued. As I reached for the ignition there was quite a loud crack (although unlike glass) and then I turned the car off. Once I put the electrical power back on I tried to put the window back up, there was the sound of a motor straining but no movement. I have pulled the window back up to near the top and it is holding itself in place, only slipping a little as I drive. I have a friendly mechanic having a look at it next weekend but I would dearly love to be able to source any parts necessary before then as I have to drive quite a few miles to where his garage is.

Can anyone tell me what the likely fault is and what I would need to replace it. I am not completely useless with a screwdriver etc but am fearful of making it worse. Any help appreciated,

Sorry, bud, this is something that won't be common enough for anyone to say, "Just go out and buy X, Y and Z".

If it were me, I'd have the door card off and investigate, it takes about 5 minutes to remove one.

You can then put it back while you visit a breaker for any parts.

 

i had the EXACT same problem on my MY00 classic i had to open the door while winding widow up to get a tight fit to the rubber then 1 day wound down and it stayed down i took the door card off and the metal window holder thinghy lol was bent so i just bent it back into shape and never had a problem since its quite easy to remove it all but quite hard to get back in lol

 

Was worried that this would be the problem. Hmmm, so door card off eh? sounds interesting?

Thanks for the help guys, not feeling so brave about the removing and putting back on so might just wait for my man in the know. Even if I need some parts at least he can show me how to get the bugger off and on again.

i have the exact noise when i lower the window, i have been worried that it will end up like op's.
i have had the door card off and can't see anything obvious
how do you prevent it?

 

hiboth my front windows were clunking on my uk 2000,removed door cards and two fixing bolts that hold the window regulator in posistion had worked loose
i put some threadlock on them and refitted,
clunks gone and been ok for months,hope it helps?

 

thanks for that but i am unsure which fixing bolts i should be looking at,
i have checked all the ones i can see and they are all tight.
where do i find them?

 

Hello all, just a quick update. Had the door card off yesterday. Pulled the plastic damp protection sheet away and found three of the little bolts that hold the window assembly in place had worked themselves loose. Sadly this had been going on for so long that the mechanism for raising the slider that the window had bent.

After taking off the rest of the bolts that held it in place, and giving my self the important job of holding the unattached window (nice to be useful) my man bent the arm back into shape (the window had to be moved up and down to gain access to all the bolts that held it in place). I suppose you could purchase a new/used mechanism. We then refitted the mechanism and put all of the bolts back. The only thing to look at is that the bolt on the far right hand side is there to adjust the window angle so only tighten when you have the window in place.

All in all it was actually quite straight forward, and now I have seen how to do it I would feel confident about removing door card etc again. I would rate myself as a failed meccano enthusiast when it comes to this sort of thing.

LOL, I've had my doorcards on and off so many times I can now remove one and refit it in under five minutes.

I can do the same for the o/s headlight on a Xantia
