can someone explain the benefits/disadvantages of heat wrapping a down pipe?

Firstlt retains heat in the exhaust and hot gases move faster than cold ones therfore the exhuast can work more effectively.
Also keeps heat out of the engine bay, reduces under bonnet temps which in turn reduces heat soak into other components, steering rack etc. Especially if you have an under bonet mounted air filter keeps intake temps lower too.

Rubbish - wrapping a downpipe does help for the reasons said before - especially reducing heat in the engine bay and intake temps by extension as a good portion of it sits under the turbo and alongside the gearbox before finally exiting under the car. My downpipe regualrly gets to 600C +.

The car will also not run worse, better if anything but I doubt you'd notice.
As far as I know there are no disadvantages to heat wrapping a down pipe and I would do it without giving it a second thought.
I recommend you wrap the downpipe, i ran mine unwrapped for a couple of miles and the heat coming into the cockpit when on boost was unbearable last summer... Took it off, wrapped it, back on and all is well
Never bothered wrapping mine on my RA or my newage now... dosnt seam to affect power lol
Why do Evo's never heat wrap there manifolds when there directly in front of the engine, anyone know ?

Yeah probably, just always thought why we did and they didnt lol
I heat wrapped headers, up-pipe, downpipe and even the FMIC pipes when i was in a drag race series, but now for a road car i cant be arsed and it dosnt seam to have effected anything, my times might not be as fast but im not racing on the road

LOL if you have the time and inclination, go and take it all off, and give the car a hammering, then go out and drive it again and see how different it will feel. Extra heat in the engine bay from remaps, modifications etc will slowly sap responsiveness and top end power.
I had a good sized fmic on my old cupra and the difference in both logging and driving was very noticeable once the engine was hot. With the fmic it only took a few yards driving from traffic lights and the intake temp was right back down to what it should have been, the smic took an awful long time just to drop a few degrees.
