Default 97 WRX water loss but where?

Guys,

About ever 100 miles or so Im getting through a header tank of water. Oil is perfectly ok, it doesnt smoke, performance is fine.

I dont know the layout of the water system but how is the overflow bottle in the wing invovled? I cracked it about a year ago but though I had repaired it so my thoughts were I was losing it through there.

However, Im told water would only be going into the overflow if the system was pressurising i.e head problems. but on the overflow bottle I can see min and max markings which i thought you would keep topped up?

Can anyone make any sense of my ramblings?

Thanks

Ben

Sounds like it could be head gasket had the same thing on my 2005 spec c last week and it turned out to be the head gasket, oh and when you top up the coolant you should do it at the header tank not the expansion tank.

Thanks.

Yeah i do top up the header I just noticed the markings on the expansion tank. So, what role doe the expansion tank play? Does it hold water all of the time?

Also are there any tests i can do to see if it is head problems? Like I said so far there are no indications other than losing water.

could be awater leak from pump which drops onto the exhaust and evaporates, and might only leak when the metals expand when hot, also the max min mark on the over flow bottle are there to tell you when to empty.
To check for head gasket you need to get a sniffer test done at agarage which is a fluid filled container that sits on top of the expansion tank and the gases that come out and go through the fluid and if they contain co which could only come from the the cylinders ie comprimise of head gasket it will turn the fluid from blue to yellow hope this helps mate
