Not my Scooby, but a friends 03 WRX STI.

I got the clutch for him from a local Jap Import car part supplier. I know the guy who owns it and he stocks all sorts of new parts for Scoobys/Evos etc and is a worldwide distributor.

Anyways, he just got the std Exedy replacement and a garage local to us both fitted it.

He called me today saying the car was juddering badly when first pulling away and he can also smell the clutch badly too. The guys at the garage seem to think its a fault with the clutch he said?? Feel a bit **** for my mate cos he's paid for the new clutch and garage have charged him 360quid labour and it still ain't sorted!

Now I'm going to call the supplier 2moro and see what he says, but what do you guys think? Think it just needs to "bed in?". I don't think the flywheel was changed, think this could have anything to do with it?

i got judder on my exedy pink box and clutch burning smell on high gear changes..

later turned out the clutch pedal needed adjusting as it was rising as the car or clutch got hotter? you getting anything like that?

also 360 is a lot for labour! i paid £150 from richard henry in bradford

as for flywheel.. i didnt replace mine but it looked in perfect conditiion.. what was your mates like?

also forgot to say the juddering stopped after 1800 miles.. just one day while driving it went..

 

my exedy still judders a bit, only smells if sat holding it on a hill, what sort of adjustment was done on your clutch eggy?

Aint seen the car yet, just got brief details off him on phone today. Apparantly the flywheel "seemed ok" so wasn't replaced.....

 

i dont know.. it was wierd, i'd drive the car for 1 hour and the clutch would rise so much it would be as if there was no clutch or bite.. impossible to drive.

the local specialist (richard henry) got in the footwell and adjusted the pedal there somehow, took a few mins..been perfect since and no clutch burning or slipping on hard gear changes anymore.

done 3k miles since..

o forgot to say i fitted this clutch with a mate, so we thought we did something wrong.. but richard henry said we didnt , its just that the clutch pedal itself rarely needs adjusting on a scoob after a clutch change.. might be the reason our clutch went in the first place.

p.s. just remembered he said he adjusted the clutch pedal so that it has 'play' before the clutch is engaged.. because the clutch wold rise before.. they would be no play which meant the clutch would never full disengage.. or something along those lines..

 

Could be the spiggot bearing in the center of the flywheel was not changed hence judder which in turn means uneven engagement of the clutch which could also reason the smell too, often overlooked as not part of the clutch kit but just as important imo, also was the flywheel skimed the lightest facing on the flywheel is not good for the new clutch.

 

The standard exedy clutch is known for its judder, they also do an anti judder one. As for £360 for changing a clutch thats robbery. You should always take these cars to someone who knows them, they usually fix them in half the time.

 

mine is the exedy fast road organic job with a competition clutch lightened flywheel, think most of the juddering is not enough revs to set off lol, where abouts is that garage eggy? are they subaru specialists? might have to give them a try. pm me please.

 

I have also got an exedy pink organic clutch and until it is well warmed up it judders like crazy and can stink a bit.

 

the op states the clutch fitted is standard so why is it being comparing to organic pink stage 1 racing ect??? not sure about exedy replacements are known to judder either?? ive had a many over the years and are fine if fitted correctly.

 

Well supplier is certain its due to the flywheel not being skimmed, but the garage seem to think it didnt need to be skimmed as it was fine. I think the garage are going to get the car back in next week and skim it, so hopefully it'll be sorted......

 

if its going back make sure the spiggot bearing in the centre of the flywheel is also checked/replaced as req while the flywheel is out for skim too
