When my car is ticking over the engine tone seems to vary it as if something isn't quite right.
The rev counter only moves very slightly.
Has anyone else had this problem? it more anoying than anything else.

Thanks

Hugh

Unhappy

Hugh read similar topic in general. Seems to be common. Mine has it intermittently both in severity and occasion. I can't make up my mind but I suspect it is getting worse as time progresses.

You possibly have an air leak somewhere or a sticking idle speed control sensor. An engineer showed me an excellent fault finding procedure - while the car is idling, simply take a can of brake cleaner (with a long spray nozzle extension)and spray it liberaly around the hoses, connections, throttle body etc. If the revs rise, then that is the source of the leak.

The brake cleaner evaporates quickly, so there is little risk of blowing your engine up unless you spray copious amounts up the air intake! Hope this helps!
