Hey Guys,

When I'm driving with the window down next to a wall/row of cars (anything close that bounces the sound back to you) I am getting a slight grinding noise.

Seems to disappear when breaking though.

Any ideas - Brakes/Wheel Bearing?

my wagon does the same, its the rear brakes on mine theyre not seized or binding and getting hot i think its just the outside pad slightly rubbing because of the slide boots push the calipers back a little. i would still check it out though in case its something else causing the noise.

 

Going to ring the garage tomorrow to get it booked in. Had a look yesterday to make sure there wasn't a little stone caught by the calliper or anything silly like that.

Anyone else have a problem like this? Does sound like the pad is slightly rubbing as it seems to disappear when on the breaks.

Any other thoughts?

It's an 07 Hawkeye, 11k on the clock if it makes a difference.

I have same prob here 07 wrx 30k on clock. had it in the stealers for last sevice 1k ago original brake pads, service manager say will last till next service, but every now and then get a horific grinding from nearside front just as the car is pulling up. Next time i brake silence think it may be a stone but getting worse now every 1 in 10 times I brake. Will going to stealers Monday to find out whats up at wits end as its itermitting fault. Hope someone on here has a answer !

 

Bit of a follow up - Car was booked in to the garage this morning for a quick diagnosis. Within 10 mins or so the car was back off the ramp and diagnosed with a shot bearing in the rear diff.

Bad times but the work is being done under warranty so for me

Will it be ok to run the car as it is at the moment?

Been thinking about it and should a diff bearing go at 11k - a bit premature isn't it?!

 

No diff bearing shouldnt go but **** happens.

If the bearing is gone your pinion shaft will be allowed to move which could effectivly cause loss contact with the diff cogs meaning you might sheer some teeth and wreck the diff completely.

Did this to my defender. Fort a new Diff for the defender includding bearings was 75 quid lol.
