hi all i want to clean my 2005 wrx engine whats the safest way to do this i got sum autoglym engine cleaner is it safe to pressure wash the engine any tips best way to do it cheers

 

Yes autoglym engine cleaner is good stuff. just make sure you cover all the electrical stuff with something like tin foil, spray on AEC give it a little scrub then gently spray off with your washer (done)

The Poundshop stocks tins of Engine Cleaner .... I buy 3 cans, warm the engine, cover the alarm, spray 2 cans all over, leave for 15 minutes, start engine and jet wash as engine runs, stop jet wash when happy all has been removed, leave engine running and spray any areas not totally clean with the 3rd tin, leave engine running and jet wash everything again, close bonnet and allow it to steam clean ....... engine still running - take for a run, job done - result will be fantastic.

Cost = £3 ... Dip Yer Bread!!

ps - do NOT spray the IC fins!!

 

I cleaned my sti engine with auto glym i just sprayed auto glym machine cleaner on the engine and brushed the dirt off with a paint brush then i swiled it off with water.I work in a garage and i have nackered a altanator up from steam cleaning a engine so i would not advise steam cleaning it.as it knocks all the grease out of the pully bairings.

 

What happens if you do the fins ?

No I was just curious what the degreaser would do to the alloy fins

 

I was talking about the jet washing of the fins ..... the cleaner will have no effect, maybe a gentle stream of water? I put cardboard over my fins when I jet wash.

I also use metal polish and my Aldi version of a Dremel (about £40 cheaper) Took me about 3 hours and i went through two of the little brass wire brush tools for my Dremel-a-like, I didnt use any water, jetwash etc just lots of microfibre clothes to use the products above. For some reason the vinyl cleaner shifts pretty much anything, turned out like this:

 

OOOOOh I thought you meant the degreaser I have seen a few scoobs with really clean i/c fins I wonder what they use

Hopefully you won't have a cone filter taking hot air in though!!??

 

If you use a high pressure wash on the fins they will be ripped out (very bad case) or totally mashed by the HP water. (Not so bad case) However even with the not so bad case the solution is still pretty simple and just the same. You need a replacement intercooler.

 

When I clean my engine next it will be with a steam cleaner but with the battery disconnected and all ancillary electrics removed. So no water ingress problems and better access. No effect on intercooler as FMIC. So hopefully a nice clean engine.

 

Baz come clean my engine bay! looks ace mate. Never tried to do my bug wrx bay but after seing that i might give it a go!!

 

had a go today took me 4 hrs i gave up after that hard work car was bad just used autoglm engine cleaner,brush and sponge and bucket

 

its got the heat shield fitted

i used a big can of gunk foam on mine then jetwashed it off.job done and only cost £5.
