What, a whine when you take your foot off the accelerator to slow down? If so, I get the same, just transmission noise.

Ive got a noise on mine atm when slowing down, either when i let off the accelerator or let clutch out in a lower gear, the noise semms to happen with the momentum of the engine so my guess is my rear diff mount bushes, or cv joint or maybe even a wheel bearing.

Am getting similar problem on my 95 WRX. Humming noise coming from rear changing to a deeper sound when coming off the power. Have changed a rear bearing and rear drive shaft thinking the noise was worn bearing or cv joint. The noise was still there! Replaced the rear diff oil yesterday and will see if that makes a difference. Otherwise I'd guess there's a problem with the rear diff itself.
