Sorry if I'm being a bit slow, but was the old Legacy used to create the Daewoo Espero (in the same way as the Mk2 Astra became one of their other fine automobiles)?

 

No- it was based on the Mark 1 Vauxhall Cavalier.

Close but it was based on the Mk 2 Cavalier platform, with the engines based initially on the GM Family 2 series.

Protons used to be re-badged mitsubishi lancers. Dunno if they still are, but it would be interesting to buy a Mk1 or 2 evo and rebadge it as a Proton.

 

Proton Sagas only used Mitsi running gear. The body is Protons. I have spent time at the plant in Kuala Lumpa.

Suzuki and Daihatsu are probably the biggest sharers (outside of Lada and Fiat ). Like the van they both do which is identical.

Then there was Ford and Mazda with the Laser and 323.

Errr, Suzuki is very interested (fiercely) in staying independent, and Daihatsu is a Toyota subsidiary...

And FWIW Honda and Suabaru have NO history of working together...

The old Fiesta and 121 were one and the same (Ford owns Mazda).

The Proton (with Mitsu Money in there) IS the old Mitsu Mirage, and the old Lancer became the Wira (a la Evo 1 thru 3) made it there too (since it was a mirage with 4 doors and a boot). They did develop the 5 door hatch though - that did not exist as model in the original line-up in Japan.

They are certainly on the road in NZ. Have not seen any in blighty but they do exist. Oops... See below. They do exist in Blighty.

Mitsubishi did indeed do the development work for Proton. The body was a Proton effort though.

Obviously different specifications in the photos but you get the idea. Both manufacturers came out with similar 3/5dr specifications. Difference was either a 1 litre or a 1.3 litre engine.

Honda Legend - Subaru Legacy photos coming. Just have to dig them out.

 

Also, I wonder how much of my car Subaru actually make: The electric window buttons say nissan on the underside, and the indicator repeater lenses have the Daihatsu logo on them!

The Proton Saga is a very old Lancer, but with a different front & rear. The Proton Compact is the old generation Mirage, the Wira is old Lancer.
Some commercial vehicles in Japan are sold as OEM to other manufacturers, esp small vans. The Daihatsu Storia (Sirion) & Terios are available as Toyotas in Japan. The Honda Accord & Civic are available as Isuzu ASKA/Vertex in Japan. The list goes on.
BTW, the 1.3 engine in the Sirion is the same as the Yaris.
Hyundais used to use Mitsubishi components.

 

It's amazing how companies tend to work together in this world...I have seen an increasing amount of Delphi electronics(subsidiary of General Motors IIRC) showing up in US spec honda's lately.

i have seen mercedes S-class rebadged as daewoo in taiwan!

btw, proton also rebadge the citreon AX as the proton tiara.

 

Now the car I had for 3 years before the scooby was.....a Daewoo Espero CDXi!!
And I must say, for the dosh of £300 per month inclusive of servicing for 3 years, it was a dam good car!

 

Actually, that Daewoo is called the Daewoo Chairman. It's based on the Benz W124 floorplan and it has the old straight 6 3.2 Benz engine. It's basically a rebodied W124 E320.
The 2nd generation Honda Legend is sold as a Korean branded car in Korea, and the previous generation Nissan Cefiro/QX is sold as a Samsung in Korea.
Talking abt brand sharing cars, u cannot beat the Indians. Vauxhall Victors, Morris Oxfords and Rover SD1 are available NEW there, of course all with Indian brandnames.

Not wanting to flame you but Delphi is NOT a subsidiary of General Motors anymore (at least since 98).
I gotta know as I work for Delphi.....
