Good approach.....

Great idea, with the exception of the Muppet forum

Having said that, if the posts are not degrading/ rude then we all like to let our hair down from time to time....

YEEEEAAAAHH!!!!

If you think it’s unfair that we removed a post or thread then email us. Do not go bitching on the forum because that’ll be deleted too. If you feel you are a legend and wish to inflict your legendary status opon others, go elsewhere, that kind of personal agenda is not welcome here.
Please can Scoobynet have this engraved in virtual stone somewhere??

As long as the person concerned is warned by the mods when they remove a moronic post, I think it's a good idea.

Absolutely spot on!

We are fortunate on Scoobynet that we have a superb BBS, with a wide range of forums available. So implementing that kind of policy should only effect those we'd like to see the back of anyway.

Such as who?
People were posting "was it you ...." in the general forum and a new forum was created [by popular demand].
People were posting "how good is p1 with blahblahblah ..." getting deserved abuse and the muppet forum was born.
People were posting regarding computers and peripherals and computer related came into being.

The forum that will never come into being that we need most is the "My car got screwed by this tuner". Which is how ScoobynetII came into existence.

All this talk of how certain threads are crap etc and they all seem to be making at least three pages of comments. Amazing.

Remove the post count - it achieves nothing except encourage the muppets and a sense of 'more worthy than thou' from the longer term participants.

Yep post count is no indication of knowledge may be a star for each year on the BBS instead . I agree get rid of the crap threads immediately, no ifs or buts. Good on the aussies enough is enough IMHO.

To be totally honest I would have to agree with 'harsher' moderation in General in particular. If someone is blatently taking the pi55 just delete the posts straight off. Might be a lot of work to begin with, but the pi55 takers would get fed up and leave or toe the line.

p.s. - Please don't touch the Muppet Forum. You would make a lot of people homeless. Whatever happened to care in the community

I love the way the aussies get the message across. It wouldn't be a bad idea barring users with ridiculously high post counts. I mean, how many of the 10,700 posts were valuable contributions?

as above get rid of the post count, its totally pointless and encourages stupid comments all over the shop.

i know nobody wants it but the only way to get rid of these idiots once and for all is to charge people an admin fee to use the bbs.

I dont think is it that fact that there are people with high post counts if they want to spend there life posting then fair enough . I woudlnt want to see anyone barred with a high post count and I cant see Simon doing that. Its just that with a few its a case of I have 5000 posts therefore I am better than you ego . It when people purely post to increase their post count its pointless . I have seen threads "Increase you post count here" and "get rid of your newbie status here". Removing the post count would remove this ego boosting exercise. Sure I could get 20000 posts by tomorrow but whats the point its simply childish .

I agree, with some of the above statements.....General, Drive Train Etc..etc, should be for the serious questions and comments. The Muppet Show, is what it says it is...a place to go and do what you want (within reason of course)

and as for HEALEYB's how many of the 10700 were valuable contributions, well maybe none, but if they were all posted in the Muppet forum what difference does it make??

Bring in tougher moderation by all means, but leave the Muppet forum to the Muppets and as a place where people can let off steam.

Gordo,

Although I don't really see any value in the post count, I think you've rather missed the point, to a certain extent.

It's no indication of how valuable a member is to the board, or how long they've been on the BBS. In fact, it can work the other way, in that you can get an idea of how many considered responses they might have given, from those who've got a four figure post count within a matter of months. Conversely, just because someone's been on the board almost since the begining (and yes that does include me),it doesn't make them a valuable member.

Unfortunately, there are people out there (including yourself) who seem to take offence at those you class as the " 'more worthy than thou' longer term participants." What you don't appreciate is that these members have been around long enough to see the changes that have taken place, together with the valuable members of the board who, having become disillusioned with the BBS, have drifted away.

I don't consider myself a particularly valuable member of Scoobynet, but there are several that I would hate to see go, and there's already several more who do little more than lurk these days.

What the Aussies are doing is pretty much what has been discussed over the last few days, following Andy's departure. I fail to see why anyone, other than the main offenders, should have cause for complaint if the same thing were to be implemented on Scoobynet.

The trouble is, if you've for a muppet forum, you're going to get muppets. And it's a lot of time and effort to get their posts in the right place. There's such a high volume of posts ("what colour socks are you wearing?") that it's going to take an awful lot of moderating to get it shipshape and keep it that way. More than you can ask of unpaid volunteers reckon. There's such a lot of dross getting posted that even sensible people are being drawn into it, I suppose it's like a breakdown of discipline in a school, everyone thinks "why should I bother, it won't make any difference".

Question

healeyb - You seem to be implying that muppet forum behaviour is spilling over into other forums and causing everyone else to behave in a similar manor. How many threads have been transferred to MF in the past 2 days? How many have been transferred to other forums? Are you suggesting that people who post a for sale in general should be banned?

I suppose it's like a breakdown of discipline in a school

I think it's more a school playground actually. Take that away, and kids start playing in the classroom.

The problems on this BBS (which, it bears repeating, contentrates mostly round the General Forum) are not related at all to the muppet forum.

I would agree with this, and would also go as far as making an charge £10 to use the service. Keep the banners and give the money to charity.

And while we're at it - how about not showing the post count

It just stops the need to post purely to get your post count up
