If you are planning a long term mod go for Motec or Solaris or similar.

Buy the best you can afford of everything otherwise you will buy twice on many items as power increases.

Examples:

Large Front Mounted Inter Cooler
ECU
Closed Deck Block (if you intend proper power) 500+

Does anyone know how much a Simtek install (including a mapping session) costs? I heard it was in the £1000 region.

I would recommend the Apexi Power FC ECU. It's ideal for what you want(300bhp) and there's no need to go with the simtek on a MY98 UK Turbo because the MAF sensor doesn't have the same issues as the 99/00 cars.

Edited to say - My Apexi was £930 fitted and mapped by Andy Forrest, which is pretty much the going rate among all the good mappers.

Get the simtek, it deletes the MAF & IMHO is a better ECU than the Apexi (I've used both) and the Simtek has antilag & launch control.

Give Enginetuner a call & speak to Martyn

I would opt for Hydra if your budget will allow mate. Speak Richard Bulmer at Tracktive Solutions

Maybe slightly off topic, but how easy would it be to revert to a standard car once you've been Simtek'd?

Just a matter of replacing the ECU and MAF?

400BHP on a uk classic will cost you a fortune, 300 will be expensive enough, forget going 2.5 unless you have cash for a gearbox and clutch upgrade as the extra torque will kill both, your probably looking at 1k for the simtek mapped/fitted, a few hundred for the turbo, you WILL need to upgrade the brakes on your car to something seriously better, the subaru 4 pots are the cheapest option at around 250 for a good set, and then you will have to upgrade the discs and pads.
So your probably looking at 2.5k for a decent 300bhp build, but I would get a car health check before carrying out any work to start with to see if you have any other problems.
Oh and your car doesnt have a version no matter what people say, its totally confusing as only STI's have versions (classic ones only)

I'm sure the Simtek is more expensive and doesn't have knock correction? Why would you go for that over the Apexi when you're only looking for 300bhp and you don't need anti-lag?

Can you imagine running anti-lag and launch control on what is basically a near standard Turbo 2000? Disaster waiting to happen.

Apexi
No active ign. timing retard/adv.
Just a couple of knock warings (Commander numerical level reading and CEL flash threshold limit).

Also has CEL flash warnings for "Air Flow voltage" and "Inj. duty cycle" threshold setting.

Simtek
No ign. retard/adv.
Just a CEL flash for knock level threshold..... BUT I believe Simtek are working on a firmware upgrade to include active ign. retard/adv.

As said, I think Simtek is overkill when compared to the money required to be spent on the other supporting mods. I'd seriously look for a cheapish 2nd hand Apexi PFC too. Plus, it's more than capable...

Also, the MY97/98 MAFs are much more robust than the MY99/00 ones. Plus you can constantly monitor its output voltage on the Apexi Commander anyway (as well as set up that CEL flash feature if you want) - so no worries there...

Oh in that case, a Simtek - and junking the MAF - would be worthwhile then...
