Default Newbie - EJ20 bored to 2.1

Hello, new to the world of jap, decided to convert.

i am looking into getting version 5 classic. i will definatly be forging the engine my self, reading into it i will be doing an EJ20 2.1 stroker kit, seems to be one not badly rated on ebay. (the better of the two kits) i take it with this kit, i will require my engine to be honed/bored to 2.1 and i am wondering what companys do this.

bit of history on what i am looking for, a car that will get into the 11 second quarters, so around 420bhp would be ideal for me, i want to build the engine my self, (have lots of experience in VW engines) but the 2.5 engines are supposed to be less rev happy so i would like to stay to the standard block.

if any one could enlighten me on the subject i would be greatful

cheers, Warren

P.S any info on the uprated head bolts capable of 500bhp

I went to Lateral Performance yesterday, spoke to Mark who told me exactly what I needed for a 2.1 stroker kit including a Closed Deck Block.

All ordered and being fited next week by Xtreme Scoobies

Search the lateral Performance website for all your parts.

Cheers Ben

I got all my 2.1 parts from Mark at Lateral.

Been running them for 2 years of drag use now and they have been fine. Running over 500bhp for most of that time too, now up to 570.

About the head studs, Im running 11mm arp studs on mine.

I've always wanted to know at what boost/power/CR level - or whatever - is it worthwhile going to the std. 11mm uprated head bolts?

Also, when should you use the even stronger 14mm ones ones (with machining to accept these, obviously).

I would use 11mm arp studs for a forged build up to around 450-480bhp after that for peace of mind I would go with 14mm.

The extra capacity comes from a longer throw crank, the rods & pistons are changed to suit...

My next step is a 2.1, or maybe an 81 mm crank to add a few more cc's ?

So the OEM studs should be fine for 400bhp, then?

thanks for all the replys, that great information i will search into both companies and decide on the best. so does lateral supply the block as well.

will both these companies machine the head bolts required, i belive i will go the 14mm its better to be safer than sorry, or are the 11mm alot cheaper to put into the engine build?

whats a rough price i will be spending on the build any one got a spec list and what they got for that, not including labour

again, thanks for the quick replies much appreciated

also been looking into the closed deck block on lateral performance, any one using this is seems like a good buy if i am going for the lot, and will this work well with the 2.1 stroker kit on ebay, or should i get it all form one company?

cheers

Get it all from one company at least that way you will not have any compatability issues which you i believe you will find if you start mixing and matching.

I use Mark @ Lateral personally.

Good Luck

Head work i.e. port and polish will assist in the spool up of the turbo.

What heads are you thinking of using? i.e. which version heads? and which turbo did you have in mind? as with this information might be able to give you more info.

not sure about turbos really i would like something that will spool up fairly quick, may be a 20G but there limits are more around that mark arnt they? any recommendatations on other turbos, as i said i am new really so dont know much about my options only really got to grips since making this thread.

i heard version 5 heads are good to use, and i will most likely get this ported and polished

and i am on the lookout as of now for a CDB to let me know if you see one up for sale,

cheers for the replies, Warren

Don't actually need a CDB for c.420 - ODB's are still good for around 500.

If getting a MY99 Version 5, then STi v.5 heads - especially ported and polished! - make sense, as they're obviously a direct replacement and have plenty of flow capability, etc...

20g (or MD321H) would possibly make 420 on V-Power + meth/E85. Best bet would be a 450bhp MD321T (or Enginetuner's S206) to be certain (and would prob make 400+ on 97 only!...)

MD321T works wonders with a 2.5 but also works fine on a 2.0 too - so should still be groovy on a 2.1...

I'd also fit a set of harvey's OEM ported and polished headers and up-pipe, as you'll claw back some 200-400rpm earlier spool (thus offsetting any later spool that the bigger turbo will invariably 'suffer'). The headers will also gain you something mid-top end too.
