I recently bought an early impreza wagon engine that had no modine between the block and the filter. Has anyone else found this? Surely the oil would overheat as its not being cooled down in anyway?
Your thoughts please.

Dont think my old L reg legacy GT had one either... well not one that looked like the standard one on the impreza anyway.

The oil wouldn't overheat but would run very hot without some form of an oil cooler fitted and especially as the EJ** series of engines require a good oil supply to the bottom end for reliability.

It would be easier and probably cheaper to fit an external oil cooler kit and sandwich plate to keep the engine oil running cooler as opposed to trying to retro fit the original modine oil cooler set up.
To fit the OE set up,you would need :

Modine Oil cooler and retaining bolt.
Water Pump ( with the outlet stub for the Modine Cooler).
Hard pipe from cooler to water pump.
3 x 90 degree coolant pipes and 6 hose clips.
Coolant take off stub for the block.

Probably be twice the cost of an external oil cooler kit tbh.

Point to note: The water to oil modine cooler also helps heats the oil when the engine is cold, as the coolant heats up faster than the oil. Something to note if using 15w oils in winter.
