Default TMIC and 450+bhp - stupid idea?

My 2.5l forged build will be ready soon, although it will be a month or two longer before it is a) run-in and ready for mapping and b) more importantly, the new twinscroll turbo I'll be using is ready to be fitted.

I have been stubbornly planning to stick with a TMIC (car is '05 JDM STi) as I know several people (Andy Forrest for one) successfully run 450bhp through an STi TMIC but, not surprisingly, many folk are saying I'm mad to even consider it. My aim is 450/450 although the build is good for 500+.

So, am I being stupid to even consider sticking with the TMIC? Will it really be as bad as people suggest and severely limit power?

Opinions welcomed!

"power" can be overated. IHMO a car with a TMIC will be quicker than a car with a FMIC (all other mods being the same).

I would want to stay with TMIC for as long as possible personally and I would recommend speaking to your mapper about your requirements. The TMIC may be on it's limit at 450 though.

Have you already chosen a mapper?

Hi Tim. I'm running a TMIC at 415bhp and a MD321H on a 2L at 1.7 bar boost and have absolutely no issues whatsoever. Lightening quick throttle response for me is worth any top end power losses under hard sustained throttle (eg track work). A bigger turbo running a bit less boost on a 2.5 should make 450bhp on a TMIC comfortably. I'm going for a built engine and bigger turbo eventually and I fully intend to stay with the TMIC

Have to agree that was a good read, so fmic seems to be the best idea but what would be nice to know is

Would it be an idea to reverse the inlet at the same time or is this very costly and not worth the time

Be intresting to hear other peoples response on this, as we recently fitted a FMIC to my brothers STi and to be honest I dont like the way it drives now, the car used to spool up really quick, but now it seems to laggy. o.k its not running big bhp as he is still running the standard turbo, but it seems to have ruined what I thought was a very nice road car.

Thought about water injection? I could only get a small intercooler on my Fiat Coupe a few years ago and fitted water injection to get the temps down in the summer. It took a fair bit of experimenting but worked really well in the end, also used a water / methanol mix so it gave the fuel a bit of a boost, good safety features as well so that if the WI failed the ECU would trip back to a standard map.
