Anybody got a Civic I-CDTi Type S?

Intrigued by the comments in the other thread about the Honda 2.2 cdti engine, I've been looking at where it's been used and the Civic looks like a good package and now coming around 10k.
I've never liked diesels, never really liked the vtec Hondas, don't really care for the 4 door civic styling but I have to admit that, after poking around and reading reviews, the all round appeal (car, performance, dealers, economy etc) of the three door type S is growing on me and looks pretty good if you're in that market.
So anyone got one? Thoughts?

We have an ES and we're not as impressed as we'd hoped we would.
Economy is around 43mpg average which is worse than expected but it pulls well with a good rev range. We have a problem with clutch slip which although it's a common problem the dealer claimed they couldn't recreate it![Mad](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/mad.gif)
Handling is OK but the ride is astonishingly hard. I don't know if the Type S is harder. Feels quite tall when pushing it.
The interior is comfortable and well built and looks great but it's impossible to keep clean, it attracts detritus from a 100 mile radius like a **** magnet.
Really practical car, loads of boot space and the rear seats fold up like cinema seats which is dead handy at times.
Don't buy a black one, they look nice for 10 mins after you've washed it but then they look dirty again. Stone chips are a problem: the shape of the car plus soft paint conspire to make it look bad.

Cheers, always nice to get real world views.
It does seem practical, my mrs immediately brought up the pot plants in the back! Not sure how it would be in the three door tho?

My parents have a 56 plate 2.2 diesel civic. Handling is pretty decent, and the engine is good too. The problem is the total lack of headroom! I'm only 5ft 11 and I find it horrible getting in and out of it because of how low the door frame is.
Not much better when you're inside either. My head is either touching the roof(Lol), or, if I put the seat down I feel like I'm in a trackcar I'm sat so low in the car! Hate it! Would never have one. Visibility is cack as well.
These are all things that you could weigh up when you have a look at one though. My opinion though, is that they're sh*te.

Can't comment on the engine but I drove a mates 3 door type R, I'm 6ft4 and I had no problem with interior cabin room so slightly confused by TerzoAlan's issues with head height, although I personally like to have my car seat very low.
I found the 3 door boot to be massive when I looked at it, can't compare to a 5 door as I've never been in one.
I can't comment on how the rear seats fold either.
The turning circle was massive on the Type R, don't know if it applies on other models in the range or not

I have owened a 2.2 diesel types s for 2 years as my daily driver. The engine is very smooth and has plenty of torque and ive averaged 52 mpg over 33,000 miles. Like wise the 6speed gearbox is a joy to use. Grip and high speed stability is also very good but ride is a little hard, over poor roads you feel the bumps. Boot is vast with the flat fold magic seats. Not had any issues with headroom but im a shortarse but seems no worse than a similar sized car.
Honda service costs more than my evo so make sure you get the 3 year service plan. Liles to eats tyres brake pads and disks so also budget for these.
Would i buy another? yes without doubt the engine alone is worth it, and its alot more fun than a boring golf tdi.
oh and can be remaped to 190 odd bhp if you feel the need.

Ours is silver and seems to always look clean, I agree on most of the points above though.

Very strange, I'm also 6ft and the wrong side of 18 stone and have no issues at all with headroom or seat height, or space. In fact, the Civic has loads of room inside and a mahoosive boot!!
They are a very practical car to own, cheap to run except servicing. They do have a few issues to watch out for, but overall I would give 8/10 so far for ownership.
