Hi all

my car seems to be holding back when i floor it also its keeps cutting out... and hesistant through the rev range... the power delivery is not smooth any more

any idea's what the problem could be ?

on idle the car doesn't sound healthy... the revs keep dropping
ive been told it could be the lambda sensor or my ignition leads just wondering if any other SN members have experienced similair problems ?

The symptoms you describe are consistent with a number of different possible failures, but the Mass Air Flow Sensor would probably be the first thing to rule in or out.

Is this a sudden change in its behaviour or has it gradually worsened? Oh - and what model year is your car? The pics seem to show a classic shape but the "2000 WRX UK" is a bit confusing - is that a reference to it being a year 2000 car, or being an Impreza Turbo 2000?.

If it's a 1999 or 2000 model year classic you've got then the MAF sensor is definitely the first thing to look at.

 

yeah its a uk spec turbo 2000 any idea's where i can get hold of a MAF Sensor ?

also i need an oil catch tank need to know where the best place is to buy one of those

would put my money on the maf, a trip to your local dealers will get that sorted but be warned they are not cheap i think around £150 and i would not buy a cheap or used one off ebay or simlar if i were you.

cdf racing were doing a group buy on oil catch cans a while back so check out the group buy section or contact them in the trader area chris will sort you out

slightly incorrect above, but the point is similar

MAFs for a 99/00 car are about £80, they are now stronger than before and have a green spot on them.
You can get them from dealers or some of the better tuners
it was a known weak point and really you should be considering these as a consumable service item and replace them regularly as a matter of course

 

is there an uprated maf sensor i can put on the car ? or just the standard one ?

 

There are a number of ways to do away with/upgrade the 99/00 sensor with alternatives but none are straight fit and forget swaps - at very least you're talking about a remap to tune the ECU into the new sensor scaling. The best way to deal with it is to go to a MAP-based setup - but then you're talking about serious money on a new ECU.

As Peanuts says, the current design of Subaru MAF is a lot more reliable than the earlier ones so unless you're actually thinking of an ECU swap in the near future, you're probably best sticking with the standard part. The latest type of sensor btw, has a green line across the mounting flange rather than a green spot on the sensor head.

The part you need is 22794AA010 - Sensor CP Air Flow. Current price is about £89+vat so not quite the £150 mentioned above. It's a five minute job to change yourself with a couple of security Torx screwdrivers.
