According to a Car program on DAVE Tonight 7 - 8pm (not Top Gear, the other one)

A nitrous kit costs around a grand fitted - Refill bottles around £18 a go and insurance companies recognise NOS as a legal upgrade and may increase annual insurance by around £40 (Only £40??)

Has anyone here had a kit fitted on their road running Scooby?

How much to buy & fit?
How much are refills?

AND the BIG one - Once declared, what did it add to the insurance?

If it really is as above - I feel the need to investigate this a whole lot more!

Come on - Put me out of my misery - I am really tempted. I suppose there will be a whole load of additional tweaks required to handle having a NOS kit fitted?

[ 2 mins t'internet searching shows bottles cost £220 for 11lbs so the £18 quoted above is garbage.]

[stevebt - apparently the system only kicks in when you floor the accellerator so shouldn't drain too quickly - Lead foot depending of course]

 

To see any benefits from NOS on the road you will have to drive with the tanks open all the time and I doubt a tank would last long ??? Its better for 1/4 mile cars

Not interested in having it myself but am curious as to the legalities of having it .... i know it's not illegal to have it, i believe it's not illegal to use it but i thought you had to have a license to carry / transport the actual bottles themselves due to them being compressed gas and flammable? Also on that basis, in theory you should also then have the warning stickers on the vehicle i'm assuming?

Seem to recall a spate of dibble nicking people a while back because they weren't licensed specifically for the transport part?

 

100% legal and insurance approved. (you do have to tell them though)

 

A complete waste of money, only good for drag racing.

All the kits i know of all are usually empty 99% of the time. LOL

On paper it looks good but its more cost effective to go other routes to gain power.

 

Ive had nos for over 5 years now with no problems, Ive not fitted the kit yet on the scooby but have run it on previous cars with no major issues,
You have to tell your insurance company and fit a little com gas sticker on the rear to warn th emergency services of what your carrying,
Only problem I had was keeping the bottle full, at a cost lol

really easy to fit and set up too.

No real benefit on a turbocharged car, unless you have strengthend your engine for it
Better for N/A cars for that little bit of boost.
Its not illegal to carry it, but its illegal to use it on the road.

A mate used 50bhp jets in his clio 16v with no issues, TBH it never felt silly quick tho. Later on it was fitted to his ST205 GTfour this time with 75bhp jets, again nothing to write home about.

Both cars where setup by the wizards of noz.

 

There is no subsequent law stating its illegal, then again there is no law saying that its legal either, it will be down to the police officer who pulls you then at his/her discression gives you a fine.

MOST tuning companies state that its NOT advisable to use it on the road

I run a 50 shot of nitrous on my car, only really run it on the 1/4 mile though as it would cost a fortune all the time at £50 a fill up,

 

Me and a mate used to buy a 35KG bottle from BOC but without a pump system(approx £250) we were loosing a fair bit of gas, but it was a lot cheaper then the £2.50 a Lb it was last year,

i think the illegal bit would be the fact that you would be doing more than the 70mph limit if your using NOS for speeds less than 70, whats the point

Yes mate i run it on my spec c its all done through the Hydra ecu and only comes in after 60% throttle, it works perfectly on the strip as i can keep with 500bhp evo's with not to much trouble

yeh ive read that thread not supprised thou some of those corsa/novas with 2ltr lumps are very quick

i once saw a nova with a 2ltr fitted under the bonnet and ANOTHER engine in the rear powering the rear wheels!!

the only good thing is that ALL the kids aspire to beat a scoob, seems our cars are the bench mark

 

Ya no what ya mean, any kid in his corsa/nova can beat a scoob but at what cost.

 

not much really as you can pickup 2ltr calibra turbo engines quite cheap

i allways thought it was ok to have it in your car, but it was illegal to have it plumbed in, learn some thing new every day

 

If you google "burgerman" youll find an interesting and informative notrous oxide site.

 

You could use the nitrous in a progressive manner and use it to spool the turbo, so running just the power of the turbo at higher revs. Especially useful on 2 litre cars running big turbos!
