Has anyone outthere attempted to change the sparkys, if so how and what recommendations on type of plug? Mines a MY96.

Yes for ie. me . I preffer Denso Iridium IK22. Changing takes 3 hours. Two to cooooooooooooool engine and one removing air filter + water tank and assembly.

 

Denso Iridium IK22. Slightly "COLDER" than the original NGK ones but help if you have afrer market mods i.e Dawes Device etc.

They are not that difficult to change(about one hour) though you need to have a COLD engine to work on...a COLD BEER always helps as well... here in the tropics anyway!!

I used a 3/8" drive with a 3" extention coupled to a 5/8" spark plug socket.

I started on the drivers side (right).
With the above tools I did not need to remove the air filter box!!
You just need to remove the plug wires from the plug and fit the socket and extention on to the plug. Then attatch the handle (driver)and back out the plug.

To do the passenger side all you need to do is remove the water bottle and follow the same instructions as above.

This is for a MY00 WRX, so I hopethis helps!!

 

Denso make the HKS spark plugs. My chioce would be to go for the HKS units from BRD.

The HKS-S35I is made for HKS by DENSO. These are used in the STI IMPREZA as a performance replacement. See links below:

I eventually got the IK22 from the US for US$15.15 each

I would warn against using the IK22 in STI's. Had a set of which one blew within 700 miles. Was on a gear 3, gear 4 pull. When boost peaked in gear 4 (std STI, no engine/boost mods), my knocklink christmas tree'd for a flash and the engine became 3 cyliners! Scared me pretty well.

Quick glance in mirror revealed no white smoke -phew!. Drove to the mech and he replaced the plugs with IK24s. No problems since. Post-incident researched revealed that the difference between each gap (ie IK20 to IK22 to IK24) is supposed to be approx 70-100hp. Sounds about right then, as the std scooby does well on IK22s.
