Driving along at 30mph on the inside of a 3 lane ring road this morning, minding my own business, then Crunch, I see a Somerfield artic lorry trying to spin my rear end out, moving into the same lane as me!

Got his details, said he never saw me in his blindspot! Hopefully be repaired through his insurance.

well you answerd that yourself "Blind spot" and anyone who has ever driven a big HGV knows these things are unfortunatly a reality, and from those pics you were right in it.....obviously its the truck drivers fault as he was the one changing lanes and as such will get paid out/repaired, Its a pain in the *** but something we have to live with untill they ban all hgv's from the road and if that were to happen there would be far worse to worry about as everything in your supermarkets /local stores /high St shop's/ shopping mall /petrol station/ new car dealers/ect ect is deliverd by truck...
also its a good idea to know there is a blind spot and its generaly in the front NS wheel area of a big truck so drive defensivly and if you end up next to a truck at that position and cant go forward to get out its easy to back off ...Unless you want a new wing

As above really,Its unfortunate, But trucks do have some awful blindspots on them. Really car drivers should be shown and taught so they can drive in a way that allows truck drivers to see them. Ive never yet hit anything in the blind spot but ive come mighty close. Its quite scary when your manouvering and all of a sudden another vechicle appears in the mirror from a blind spot.

It all got sorted through insurance thankfully but the finish on that quarter was never quite right

 

Its ok i wasnt there!! that big nut shape sticking out of the bumper is the cab jacking point which is unique to volvo trucks

 

move away from them as far as you can ... i never drive anywhere next to a lorry unless in traffic jam...

these damn things sometimes go all over the place


i once got a scratch on my previous car from a delivery lorry at work, and i had to call the transport dept in order to have a polish guy explain to him what actually hapened .... as he wouldnt even understand that i got him on cctv

 

lucky mate, I had a a new Mk5 Golf company car, was in the left lane of a filter lane going up a slope when a lorry ploughed into me as it moved into my lane, burried my car into the crash barrier.

Thankfully only ego's were bruised by the Golf was history :s I think as drivers we sometimes forget we share the road with these goliaths

That is terrible, but its not the norm.

 

that is so true i drive a white van and do over 1000 miles a week and the number of cars u see side swiped in a week is unreal sum the wagon drivers fault but most the car drivers fault i would say .and u was lucky mate there could have been hell of alot more damage

 

Nothin gets it mate 'blind spot' You do get glimses here and there but they can and do vanish totally. The only way round it is to spend most of the day driving in your mirrors, watching them come in and out and back into view again whilst still watchin whats infront of you and your offside

 

I adjusted my scene view mirror out and round so that I could see there. Observation is the key though, if you look, youll see.

 

Not unique to Volvo trucks at all! Early DAF 95's had it so did S/Atkinson Strato's and the unknown to many Pegaso Troner had it too! Volvo just copied it!

Its interesting how many of the above comments seem to point at truck drivers being at fault, for all those people you should spend a few hours in the cab of a truck where you can see all the car drivers at fault!

Had a simlar thing last week on the A46 just coming new to Newark. Lorry in the lower lane decided to just pull across without warning or indication. I'm in the outside lane doing 70 closing to over take and had to jam the brakes on, drifting all over the shop and missed his rear quarter by about a foot.

Nursing is a tough job. Driving a truck and using your mirrors once in a while isn't IMO. Yes it takes skill but tough is taking it a bit far.

 

is not taking it too far mate think people should be taught on there test about looking for bikes etc and about hgvs.
yes there are kn!bhead truck drivers as there are scoobydrivers and bikers etc but i think its funny when i get abuse when im taking two lanes up on a r'bout people think i just want to **** them off nothing to do with the vehicle being 45ft long 8ft wide and weighing 30 tonnes worth of petrol on the back.

 

Spot on and I will vote for you, mate. I cannot believe some people just sit in blind spots on the motorway. It's asking for trouble.

I work upto 80 hours a week both physically and mentally driving between 9 and 10 hours a day in all weather conditions, and just to put a lid on it at least 70% of other road users have no idea how to behave around my vehicle. 55 foot long, 14 foot high, 8 foot wide and 44 ton FFS Please drive with care
