i have been to look at a 04 plate wrx £6995. they said they will accept 6000 if i dont want any warranty and they dont have to service it 50,000 miles.it has 3 stamps in the book but no stamp at 40,000. overall the car looks very tidy.I am new to subarus so all advice is welcome.

have you searched about? certainly looks on paper a good deal, but id be looking how much they are selling for private before making any firm decisions. also make sure you do the normal stuff like hpi etc, and as they are not offering any warranty at the lower price, maybe pay for an indi to look at it, theres a few that will do this for you at a reasonable price.

it sounds a good deal mate, i personally do not care too much for warranties from garages, as most of the time they never cover owt !! plus you can buy ur own warranty with companies for about £150 max and get the same cover as the dealer offers.
but as shaggy said, have a look about mate, and defo get it inspected by someone ... as the seller may know of a problem that is expensive to fix, hence the fact they are willing to knock a grand off the price OR maybe times are hard and they need a quick turn around on their cars.
Good Luck anyway chap

What mileage is the car currently on? It's always a good idea to keep upto date with the servicing, subaru engines are good but you have to maintain them properly!!
To put your buy into perspective, i bought my 03 plate wrx 4 months ago from a garage with no warranty but a full service history and the car was on 40'000 miles so had just had it's 40k service done and i paid £6995.
My car has an sti spoiler, prodrive backbox and some sti front winglets so wasnt totaly bog standard. The prices of subarus are coming down at an alarming rate due to the credit crunch, being able to run , insure (they're ins' group 19), service and tax.
Don't forget next year you'll be paying approx £440 a year for road tax and your 50k service from Subaru will set you back about £400
Hope this helps

its near ross on wye and he is a trader. The car came from ludlow in a px at south hereford garages. i was thinking of asking for 12 months mot for the £6000 price
STIs and 2.5 WRXs will be £440.

Not in my opinion. I adore mine!
However, most STI owners think that their cars are far superior and usually recommend anyone looking for a WRX to buy an STI instead.
I think it depends on your personal needs. I wanted a fun, fast, practical family saloon. I did not want a rally beast that I couldn't use as day to day transport. Mine is modded to more power than a standard STI, so I'm not wanting in the performance department, either.

it has 3 stamps the 40,000 is missing if i buy it i will put it in for the 50,000 mile service. been looking for a while this seemed a good deal but now i am having doubts
I might be wrong but I think the 50k service is the cambelt, fluids etc. Get a couple of quotes, indie garages can do it for a good price.
I have a feeling (im a finance predictor!!) that the best time to buy will be Feb next year.
You could say to them I will give you 6k with the service now or come back in 2 months and offer you 5.5k........

Tim you are correct, the 50k service is the big one, cambelt etc.
I bought a 30k mile STi from a main dealer and they did the big service early as part of the deal.
Id get the dealer to do that service for you to be honest.

My understanding is that a trader cannot sell a car to a private customer without giving a warranty even if it only him giving it.
And if something happens to the car that might reasonably be thought to have been starting to go wrong when the car was sold, the dealer has to put it right up to six months after.
So, for example, if the synchro goes on the gearbox a month down the road, the dealer would be liable to fix it.
I don't think a dealer has any option to opt out of this in any way.
Suggest you check with Trading Standards or Honest John in the Daily Telegraph.

what he wants now is on page 2, ignore the original price
