LOL unfortunately i lost control of my 97 sti a few weeks ago getting onto the a406 off hanger lane, any1 who goes there knows its a tight corner, normally i take the middle/fast lane at speed but this time i stayed in the fast lane, guess i was going a lil too fast for the corner

so if anyone saw a white scooby stuck in the fast lane at 5am, yes... it was me

anyway heres the damage:

Front drivers side:

bent wishbone
Snapped driveshaft
snapped cv joint
snapped hub
snapped drop link
snapped New dba 4000 disc
bent steering rack
Damaged caliper
Ruined new ferodo pads
bent wing
bent bonnet hinge
buckled wheel

rear drivers side:

Damaged hub

so far including recovery (i forgot to get AA before the accident) its cost me around £1200 to fix.

still have to get steering rack replaced, got a front caliper from a breaker but pistons are rusty so need to send it for refurb to godspeed. and i had only put new pads and discs on the front around 1week before the accident

 

Isnt it a 50 limit on the A406? If you were exceeding the speed limit don't come looking for a sympathy vote

 

Doubt it will ever feel the same again after that kind of damage.

And if you were exceeding the speed limit (and laughing about it on a public forum) I ain't giving no sympathy either, empty roads or not.

Least your ok - thats the main thing.

I broke an STI which had a similar incident, just because it didn't 'feel' right on the road and took several mallets to get it anywhere near aligned. I had all the parts to repair it in hand already, put it back on the road then took it straight back off and scrapped it.

 

why isn't insurance repairing it ?

doubt its worth a repair at that age-- and because there are so many for sale, cheap, who would ever buy it from you.

I'd never touch any car at all that had been dented in the slighest way....... buyers market- regardless of the car.

 

Id get Ian to do them both...

Maybe im a bit of a grandpa driver my none of my 3 scoobs have ever come close to breaking traction to the point where ive been in danger of stuffing it, even in the wet.

YEH! dont come on here looking for sympathy because no one on here has ever even got close to a speed limit never mind breaking one

I go around that corner about 30 times in a week, have to admit it does have some adverse camber and can be a abit slippery if wet or icy, and yes the speed limit is 50mph

 

i think there is even a sign warning of an adverse camber prior to the corner. having said that, i'm pretty sure you have to be gunning it lose it there

 

get your scooby onto a jig mate, I had a similar knock on my car (albiet at low speed) into a kerb.

Damage was very minor and just parts being replaced but the jig work showed up things you don't see and will ensure the car is 100% true when your driving it again.

FWIW i agree with LUCKO, makes a nice change to see someone admit it was their fault, rather than blame diesel, ice, mud etc..... so good on you in that respect.

 

My main issue with Hanger Lane isn't the speed (or more usually, the jams). It's one of those junctions that is so large, people are always in the wrong lane, whether by accident or design. I don't want my car bashed, so I tend to edge around it as quietly as possible.

I don't think I'd want to be wandering back with a bag of chips late at night if people are going to bash into the outside of the roundabout.

It's uncouth and ultimately, expensive.

Im jus sharing my experience, i wasnt going THAT fast because id just come off a red light but i think i was going a little too fast for the outside lane, i wud ave been fine had i stayed inbetween the middle and fast lane.

Anyway my steering was a little heavy, i did have snow tyres on that i could be bothered 2 change as the car had come from japan in sept and i was waiting to get new alloys and tyres together.

I have to say though the body is TOUGH!!! the wing was just pushed up a little and the bonnet too, any other car and i reckon it would have ripped the bodywork apart. If you see any orange cones and damaged barrier as soon as you get onto the a406 eastbound, thats where i hit. Anyway, im going to get some refurbished red calipers from godspeed. £195... good price?

refurbished red calipers? If they are subaru 4 pot fronts then yes id say thats a good price. going rate for newage Brembos is around 400.

Tough lesson learnt re the jap snow tyres then!

Probably but some tyres stick better in the wet than others, especially if they're like slicks
