You know that mesh right at the mouth of the air flow meter, would it help air flow if it was removed.

I'm using a pipercross induction kit as well and it seems to filter very well, so the meshing isn't really doing that much is it??

Cheers

Remove the mesh and the MAF goes bonkers, its a flow straightening device. DONT DO IT

I've removed mine, no problems yet. Julian Edgar at autospeed.com made a test once regarding air-flow on the Subaru (Liberty RS), the result of that test got me to remove my mesh...

Question

Air straightener! I don't think so, it's not got vanes or directional properties just a mesh. More likely it stops debris as a final barrier or perhaps it disperses the air flow more?

this wire mesh will cause a restriction. as the air is sucked through the holes in the mesh, turbulence is caused and disturbs (and hence slows) the airflow. removing it wont cause problems, in fact, i would have thought that the maf would be better off without this in place.

cheers

It stops dogs and small children from entering the turbo, these can heve a detrimental effect on the spool-up and tend to block the intercooler!

Thanks for your comments,

I removed the mesh and smoothed out the entrance to the MAF, with no negative side effects whatsoever .

How many other people have tried this.

Cheers

Richard

Sorry, yeah it sounds stupid, but it feels more eager from say 3,500 rpm upwards.

I suppose like all small car mods, these things add up. I have ported the exhaust manifold as well as the turbo up-pipe and intercooler pipework. All of this has made the car very strong low down (as turbo spools up faster) and has made it free reving at the top-end.

Cheers

i removed my mesh thingy the other night, is all running fine, as for increases of any kind, not sure. trouble is, i have fitted a low geared close ratio box, so once out of first gear, it doesnt go below 4000rpm, so its harder to notice these things.
as for the manifold, im gonna port mine when ive got the time.

cheers

Question

Iain

What porting can you do on the I/C pipe work? This looked pretty good to start with, or do you mean something else?

Di you use new gaskets on the exhaust manifold or did you get away with the old ones?

Cheers

Floyd

I picked the manifold up from my subaru dealer when they were fixing the piston slap, so i'm afraid i don't know if they renewed the gaskets (would have thought they would have though).

As for the IC ali pipes, i just opened the mouths, knife edged them and polished them to try and help gas-flow, pretty easy to do really. I would post pictures, but don't have a digi camera.

Cheers
