TYPE R GEARBOX- GAUGING INTEREST
hi, i've got a 1998 type r import and wanted to find out about maybe swapping in my short ratio gearbox for a 6 speed... motorway miles are a real pain as anything over 80mph and the engine is reving over 4500rpm. i was wondering if anyone had done this before or if anyone could give me some info, tips or contact numbers for someone who can help!!! cheers!!
Yes, it's been done several times before.
My Type R has a 6 speed UK DCCD 'box in it. There are several places that can do it - any of the 'big' names on here. Try API - David is very knowledgeable and WILL help you (and lighten your wallet).
The revs have dropped to 3k at about 70mph now in 6th and it's very quiet compared to before. I've lost a little on acceleration as the gears are longer, but I think it's worth it if you spend a lot of time in the car/lots of miles etc.
You'll need the 'box, gear linkage, auto prop shaft, rear diff, drive shafts etc etc. I'd allow circa £2500 to do this right. Then you can sell your old bits to help with the pain!

You could do what I did in my old TypeR Box.
I fitted the UK 5th Gear and synchro from an MY98 car to my box and bought the 4000rpm cruise up from 76mph to 88mph*
Accelleration through the othrer 4 gears (upto over a Ton which is fine for everyday needs) was the same, I just had a bit more of a noticeable step between 4th and 5th.
* This is actually what Subaru did for the V-Limited series of gearboxes.
Parts were about £100.00 and fiitting was about the same.

idealy i'd like to have the 6th gear instead of just making 5th gear a bit taller... sounds like a good cheap way of getting around the high reving problem. im still trying to figure out what i want to do with it.
the 1998 type r boxes are 5 gears by the way

It worked well for me 5years ago, but Six speeders were rare then.
If you do, Id go for a UK box and diff. The first five gears are roughly the same spread as your existing 5, but you get an extra one.
Its still a lot of money though, but the 6 speed WILL handle more power than the 5 speed.
